Prep roundup: Kamiak swimmers mix up lineup, still beat Shorecrest
Herald staff
MUKILTEO -- Kamiak head coach Chris Erickson threw an obstacle at his Kamiak boys swimming team and the Knights responded.
With many swimmers competing in events that aren't exactly their specialty, Kamiak still came out on top against Shorecrest, winning the Wesco South battle 132-54.
"We kinda spreaded things out a little bit," Erickson said. "We try to challenge them in some different things."
One of Kamiak's (3-0 in league, 5-0 overall) goals was to get two relay teams to qualify for state. The 200-yard medley team of Daniel Schmidt, Gus Brunner, Tyler Carriker and Kyle Kusuda did just that, with a state time of 1 minute, 45.28 seconds. The second relay team fell about a second short.
"I think we're gonna try that again," Erickson said.
Sophomore Kris Bratvold swam a 23.46 in the 50 freestyle that Erickson called "exciting and outstanding." He also praised Brunner's victory in the 100 freestyle in "one of the exciting, close races."
Erickson also liked his depth at the diver position. Mitchell Wright (176.15 points) won the event but fellow Knight Matt Johnson (175.25) was less than a point behind.
"They go back and forth," Erickson said.
Kevin McKay led Shorecrest (2-1, 5-2) winning the 200 freestyle (1:57.42) and the 500 freestyle in 5:14.29 for the Scots.
