BEND, Ore. - The Everett Merchants beat the Aloha Knights twice Sunday to claim the Pacific International League championship for the second straight year.
The Merchants, who lost to the Knights Saturday and were 0-3 against them this season prior to Sunday, needed to beat their nemesis twice to advance to the Semi-Pro World Series, which begins Aug. 4 in Wichita, Kan. The Merchants play their first game Aug. 8.
Tyson Boston hit a grand slam in the first game and added a three-run shot in the second game.
Merchants pitcher Levi Lacey pitched all nine innings in the first game and benefited from seven Everett runs in the second inning.
Aloha led the second game 4-0, but a six-run fourth by Everett and six shutout innings by reliever Bret Butler beat the Knights.
"That six spot really gave us some momentum," Everett manager Harold Pyatte said. "That really took the wind out of their sails."
