LYNNWOOD — Such rude hosts, the Meadowdale Mavericks are.
They held a 3 party and let only one of their guests have a taste.
Utilizing 10 3-point baskets — five of them by junior point guard Jake Linton — the Mavericks’ boys basketball team beat Mariner 74-61 Friday night at Meadowdale High School in a Western Conference South Division game. Linton scored 22 points and backcourt mate Taylor Marsh scored 11, nine via the 3-point shot.
"We feel like we have two of the best shooters in Wesco in Jake and Taylor," said Meadowdale coach Chad McGuire, whose team improved to 2-0 in the division and 2-1 overall. "They pretty much have the green light. If they’re open, it’s a high-percentage shot for them."
The Marauders (0-1, 0-2) got all three of their 3-point baskets from Delvaughn Tinned, who scored 25 points. Mariner, which scored nearly half of its points (29) in the fourth quarter, fell behind by 20 points in third quarter and 30 early in the fourth. The Marauders did not hold a lead after the first four minutes of the game.
The Mavericks rebounded quickly from Saturday’s non-conference loss to Squalicum by beating last season’s two Class 4A state playoff representatives from the South Division. Meadowdale, a Class 3A state semifinalist last season, edged Mountlake Terrace on Tuesday.
"After that disappointing loss to Squalicum, we’ve gotten better each game," said Danny Hagen, a 6-foot-6 post who contributed 11 points and four rebounds. "We played good team defense tonight."
Mariner trailed by only eight points early in the third, but Marsh and Linton each hit a 3 during an 8-0 run that put the Mavericks up 41-25 with 4 minutes, 58 seconds remaining in the third. Hagen then scored eight of his team’s next 10 points to give Meadowdale a commanding 51-31 lead with 1 minute to go in the third.
Things went from bad to worse for Mariner to begin the fourth quarter. Meadowdale’s Colin Matteson, a 6-foot-7 post, hit a rare 3 during a Meadowdale 10-0 run that gave Meadowdale a 63-33 advantage.
"Our posts are a lot quicker than most of the other posts in the league," Linton said. "If they come out to guard them, our guys can go right by them."
Mariner put together a furious late rally, scoring 29 points — including 15 from Tinned — in the final 5:15. The Marauders, however, did not get closer than 13 points in the game’s final 13 minutes.
"Coach (Dean) Wiley is our defensive coach, and he came up with a great game plan," McGuire said. "In the first half, we switched it up. We played some zone, which we normally don’t do, and went back to man-to-man. It was pretty effective."
The Mavericks made five 3-pointers in the first half to stake a 33-21 lead. The Marauders committed four of their eight first-half turnovers during Meadowdale’s 12-0 run that spanned the first and second quarters. Linton made a 3 during the run and converted three free throws after being fouled on a 3-point shot to put the Mavs up 28-13 with 5:22 remaining in the half.
Linton contributed 14 points in the half. Mariner’s Aaron Cartwright scored eight of his 17 points in the first half and pulled down five rebounds. Tommy Craddock, a 6-foot-8 junior post, scored 10 points and pulled down six rebounds for the Marauders. Matteson, Larod Lover and Kevin Myhre contributed nine, eight and seven points, respectively for the Mavericks.
