MOUNT VERNON – Justin Burns was in denial.
When his team fell behind for the first time in the fourth quarter, Burns flat out refused to accept the Mount Vernon Bulldogs were going to lose. Then he did something about it.
Burns made a game-tying 3-point basket as the buzzer sounded to end regulation, then scored 12 of his team’s 13 points in the extra period to lift Mount Vernon to a 76-74 overtime victory against Marysville-Pilchuck Tuesday night in a Western Conference North Division thriller.
“We just kept competing to the end,” Mount Vernon coach Tory Swanson said, “and Justin just made a big shot. It gave us a whole bunch of momentum.”
Mount Vernon (8-2 in league 11-3 overall) surged in overtime as Burns almost single-handedly boosted the Bulldogs to a quick seven-point lead.
“He’s been our most consistent player,” Swanson said. “Its’s fitting that he gets to hit the big shot.”
Burns, Mount Vernon’s leading scorer at more than 13 points per game, finished with a team-high 11 rebounds.
Mount Vernon led 45-43 after three quarters but Marysville-Pilchuck (4-6, 4-10) pulled ahead thanks to post Jason Krischano, who scored 22 total points and had 11 rebounds to lead the Tommies.
