Mariner rallies in fourth quarter to beat rival Kamiak

EVERETT – Many games are won and lost in the fourth quarter.

The Mariner boys basketball team provided another example, defeating Kamiak 46-37 in a Wesco South game Thursday at Mariner High School.

Behind 31-29 going into the final quarter, the Marauders outscored Kamiak 17-6, clinching the victory and the division’s No. 3 seed into the 4A District 1 tournament. Kamiak will be the fourth seed.

“We (took) control of the game,” Mariner assistant coach Rick Wike said of the final quarter.

Mariner used what Wike called a “balanced” attack.

Jerrel Grant (Mariner’s leading scorer with 12 points), Damascus Purnell (10 points), and Joey Dillon (six points) all scored four points in the final quarter.

Senior Ben Iddins kept Kamiak close with 13 points and Skylar Stormo added 10 more for the Knights.
