Tawney, Cole take the lead for hospital board
By Sharon Salyer, Herald Writer
In the three-way race for Stevens Hospital commissioner, challenger Kimberly Cole and incumbent Jack Tawney appear headed for the November general election.
Cole led Tuesday with 60 percent of the vote, while Tawney drew 25 percent and challenger Robert Reedy 14 percent.
Cole, 28, is attending Seattle University law school. Tawney, 50, has served on the hospital board since 2002.
The winner of the general election will serve a four-year term. The five-member hospital board oversees the taxpayer-supported hospital in Edmonds.
One of the issues that separated the three candidates was whether to ask voters for a tax increase to pay for hospital expansion.
Tawney said he would support it, saying that the aging hospital needs improvements. Cole said she would take a careful look at other ways of generating income before asking voters to approve a tax increase.
