EVERETT Dave Reeff thought he felt bad when his beloved Notre Dame football team lost on Saturday.
But what he awoke to Sunday made him feel even worse.
Next to his north Everett home, graffiti had been sprayed all over the top of the View Crest Abbey Mausoleum, a 1940s-era building that holds the remains of some of city’s early bankers and businessmen.
“It’s a quiet neighborhood, and it’s just not right,” said Reeff, 49, whose son pointed out the vandalism when he went outside to trim his hedges. “You don’t do this to a cemetery.”
Everett police are investigating the incident.
The vandalism was discovered by a family member of Pat Johns, who works as the abbey’s caretaker. The owners of the abbey were out of town for the weekend, Johns said.
Johns has maintained the abbey for the past nine years. It’s a job he takes pride in, he said.
He’s hoping the graffiti will be removed quickly.
“It brings a tear to your eye that this can go on,” Johns said.
Reeff said he was outside all day Saturday, watching college football on a television on his patio. When he went to bed about 10 p.m., he put his two dogs in the house something he doesn’t do often, he said.
Reeff’s family has owned the house next to the abbey since the 1960s. Vandals have hit the abbey before, but never like this, Reeff said.
“This is the worst I’ve ever seen it,” he said. “It’s just not right.”
