    A. Murphy wins contest between title contenders

    EVERETT — Archbishop Murphy's Ashley Broadwell led the Wildcats to a 3-0 victory Tuesday at home over a tough Cedarcrest volleyball squad, by scores of 25-15, 25-20, and 25-15.

    "Ashley had a strong overall game," Murphy head coach Jim Hardy said. "Tonight she had the hot hand."

    The junior outside hitter had eight kills, two blocks, two digs and three aces for the Wildcats.

    Hardy was happy to get the win, as he expects Cedarcrest to challenge the Wildcats for the district title.

    "Cedarcrest and us will be in a run for the top spot at districts," he said.

    Rachel Shober also had eight kills, two blocks, two digs and three aces for Murphy, which improved to 1-0 in their first contest of the season.

    Kristen McKinlay had three aces and four kills, and teammate Amber Shields had 11 assists and three kills for Cedarcrest, who fell to 0-1.

    Marysville-Pilchuck 3, Everett 0: At Marysville, Christine Juarez had nine kills, 10 digs, and four aces to lead the Tomahawks to a non-league victory by scores of 25-22, 25-21, and 25-16 in a warm gym on a warm night. "It was really hot — it was kind of a sauna in there," Marysville-Pilchuck head coach Shelly Johnson said. "We were very challenged by Everett and we're happy to get the win." April Bobadilla also had 16 assists for Marysville-Pilchuck, which improved to 2-0. Erin Vance had five kills and Lana Singarson had three aces for Everett, which fell to 0-2.

    Snohomish 3, Cascade 1: At Everett, Jessica Yates had 14 kills and teammate Joanna Baylin recorded six kills and seven blocks to lead Snohomish (1-1 overall) to the 23-25, 25-21, 25-18, 25-13 win. The Bruins (0-2) were led by Olivia Condotta's nine kills and Danielle Love's five kills.

    Monroe 3, Stanwood 0: At Monroe, the Bearcats beat the Spartans 25-16, 25-22, and 25-17 in the the non-league match. Monroe's Kylin Munoz had 11 kills and seven digs and Kelsey Brennan added 10 kills. The Bearcats' Kaitlyn Drew had 30 assists and two aces on 15-for-16 serving. Stanwood's Deanna Hoppe had seven kills and Kaitlyn Dowd added 21 assists. Monroe improved to 2-0 overall, while Stanwood dropped to 0-2.

    Oak Harbor 3, Arlington 0: At Arlington, Becca Wheeler had 21 assists and seven aces and teammates Jessica Muzzall, Claire Thiel and Janay Baeyen each had six kills to lead Oak Harbor (2-0 overall) to the 25-14, 25-16, 25-18 non-conference sweep of Arlington. The Eagles (0-2) were led by Kyra Prause (17 assists), Breanna Covey (six kills, eight blocks) and Kjirsten Jenson (eight blocks).

    Meadowdale 3, Jackson 1: At Mill Creek, Katie Cowan's 29 assists and 12 aces helped lead Meadowdale to the 25-12, 25-14, 23-25, 25-18 non-conference win. Anna Molitor added eight kills and Mara Eberth had 25 digs for the Mavericks (1-1 overall). Jackson (0-2) was led by Haley Sharp (12 assists, two blocks), Angelina Rich (seven kills) and Dionna Kirton (five kills and five blocks).

    Edmonds-Woodway 3, Mariner 0: At Edmonds, Leigh Fishback recorded 29 assists and Cailin Fellows added 11 kills leading the Warriors to the non-conference win. Erin Lauber added six kills and three blocks for Edmonds-Woodway (2-0 overall). Mariner dropped to 0-1.

    Shorecrest 3, Shorewood 0: At Shoreline, Kerry Clavadetscher had seven kills and 12 assists to lead Shorecrest (1-0 division, 2-0 overall) to the 25-13, 25-23, 25-20 Wesco South victory. Anna Herold added five kills and 15 assists for the Scots. For Shorewood (0-1, 0-1), Sara Hefny had 12 digs and Caroline Soules contributed three blocks and eight kills.

    Kamiak 3, Lynnwood 0: At Mukilteo, the Knights were in control throughout, as they beat the Royals 25-14, 25-8, and 25-12 in the non-league match. "The girls played outstandingly," Kamiak assistant coach Natalie Bowie said. "They communicated well." Julia Church had eight kills, Mo Dodd had four kills, Devin Larson had 19 assists, and Melissa Fredericks had seven digs for the victors. Kamiak improved to 1-1 overall, while Lynnwood dropped to 0-2.

    Kings 3, Granite Falls 0: At Granite Falls, led by outside hitter Kailey Trautman (16 kills), King's (1-0 league and overall) broke out of a 15-15 tie in game No. 1 by reeling off 10 straight points and went on to claim a 25-15, 25-15, 25-21 victory over Granite Falls (0-1, 0-1) in the Cascade Conference season opener for both teams. Michaela Dudder had 10 digs and five kills and Ericka Smith was 13-for-13 serving for Granite Falls. Jordan Irish had seven kills and three blocks and Anna Cesari had 23 assists for King's.

    South Whidbey 3, Coupeville 1: At Langley, South Whidbey (1-0 in league and overall) fell behind early, but came back to notch a 21-25, 25-15, 25-12, 25-12 victory over Coupeville (0-1, 0-2) in the Cascade Conference match. Lindsey Newman and Melanie Murphy had four kills each for South Whidbey. Coupeville was led by Emily Marti (eight digs), Megan Monroe (11 digs) and Nikki Griffin (seven kills).

    Lakewood 3, Sultan 0: At Sultan, the Cougars beat the Turks 25-13, 25-11, 25-10 en route to the Cascade Conference win. Lakewood's Peyton Mizell had 22 assists and teammate Liliya Kibitskaya had seven kills and six aces. Amanda Gregor added seven kills for Lakewood, which improved 2-0 overall. Sultan fell to 0-1.

    Darrington 3, Concrete 0: Mandy Powell (16 assists), Maggie Wicken (eight aces) and Jordan Corley (six kills) led Darrington (1-0 league, 2-0 overall) to the 25-9, 25-8, 25-7 Northwest 1A/2B League win over Concrete (0-1, 0-1).

    North Sound Christian 3, Highland Christian Prep 1: At Mountlake Terrace, North Sound Christian (1-0 league, 1-1 overall) defeated Highland Christian Prep (0-1, 0-1) 25-22, 25-15, 20-25, 25-19 in the Northwest 1B League match. For North Sound Christian, Chantelle Meeks had eight digs, four kills and two blocks; Elyse Bunger had 12 aces and 26 digs, and Tori Speck had five aces, seven digs and three kills.
