SEATTLE — A federal grand jury on Thursday returned an indictment in the killing of a gray whale by Makah tribal members during a rogue hunt, an attorney for the tribe said.
The indictment remained under seal and it wasn’t clear whether all of the five men who took part in the hunt were named, said attorney John Arum of Seattle.
The U.S. attorney’s office in Seattle planned to hold an afternoon news conference on the case.
On Monday, U.S. Attorney Jeff Sullivan and several members of his staff traveled to the tribe’s reservation at Neah Bay to tell the tribe they planned to seek an indictment under the Marine Mammal Protection Act, Arum said.
