Virginia leads nation in percentage of vanity plates 11/12/07
Street Smarts: What do we do after Proposition 1's failure? 11/12/07

You're so vain, you probably think this license plate is about you

Now that a massive road and transit measure has failed, commuters can plan on spending more time idling in traffic, notes today’s Street Smarts.

That means you’ll have a few extra minutes every day to shout at talk radio, fix your hair and study strange license plates.

A recent study found that Virginia has the nation’s highest percentage of vanity plates, but there are plenty of showoffs from other states in the online license plate gallery www.coolpl8z.com (which, for those of you about to click the link, does include plates that, uh, push the boundaries of good taste).

Here are a few of our favorite plates from the site:

AARRR: On a Jeep with a pirate skull and crossbones covering the spare tire. Now all the driver needs is a “my other car is a boat” bumper sticker.

1 MPG: Proudly displayed on a Hummer. This information will come as a shock to anyone who didn’t realize the Hummer’s gas mileage was that high.

WOOKIEE and H4N SOLO: To complete the “Star Wars” theme, the plates should be placed on a Falcon.

EEEEK: Displayed on an Oklahoma student driver car — as though you needed any further incentive to give the vehicle a wide berth.

X CIA: Don’t tailgate the car sporting this plate — there might be hidden cameras in the bumper.
