Jackson comes back to nip Kamiak in boys basketball

MUKILTEO — With just three games remaining in the season and a Class 4A district playoff berth almost within grasp, every second of every game counts for the Kamiak Knights boys basketball team. With less than two minutes remaining Friday against Jackson, the Knights had a 10-point lead but missed Kamiak free throws and big Timberwolves baskets put the game into overtime where Jackson rode its momentum to a 65-60 victory.

“We had the game won and left the door open,” Kamiak coach Greg Turcott said.

The Knights were 7-for-12 at the free throw line in the fourth quarter with many of those misses being the front ends of one-and-ones with just a couple minutes remaining.

With 30 seconds remaining, Josh Gootee made a 3-pointer cutting the Knights’ lead to two. The Timberwolves then forced a turnover and with 12 seconds remaining Brett Kingma cut into the lane from the top of the key and knocked down a shot from about 12 feet to put the game into overtime tied at 54.

In overtime the Timberwolves continued their hot streak and were able to come out on top.

“(Brett) Kingma and (Ryan) Todd kind of took (overtime) over,” Turcott said, noting Kingma’s six points and Todd’s three in the extra period.
