Community Extra: Applause
Blood center honors county volunteers
Puget Sound Blood Center honored outstanding Snohomish County volunteers, donors and partners during its annual Partners in Life awards luncheon on Feb. 14.
A Volunteer Achievement Award went to Arlington resident Clifford Stevens, a 255-unit platelet donor and an 80-unit whole blood donor.
Also receiving the achievement award was Bea Wilson, of Edmonds, who has recruited hundreds of donors to the National Marrow Donor Program. Additionally, Wayne Hoskins, also of Edmonds, received the honor because he has logged 2,500 volunteer hours and traveled more than 7,500 miles to support local blood center and community blood drives.
The Community Service Award went to Mill Creek resident Marilyn Klose, a blood drive coordinator. Klose was inspired to become a blood drive coordinator after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Since then she has registered more than 1,000 donors.
Also honored with a Community Service Award was Everett Community College for its commitment to the blood center. Since 1994, the college has hosted 64 blood drives and registered more than 3,000 donors.
Puget Sound Blood Center is an independent, community-based blood center. Recognized as a leader in transfusion medicine, the blood center operates the world's largest transfusion service, serves patients in more that 70 hospitals and clinics in 14 Western Washington counties and provides tissue and transplantation support to 185 hospitals across the Northwest.
Firefighters receive donation for donation
The Everett chapter of the International Association of Administrative Professionals recently made a donation of $190 to the Everett Firefighters Association. The donation will go to one of several charities the fire fighters sponsor each year.
The chapter made the donation in appreciation for use of the Firefighter's assembly hall while its usual meeting hall is under renovation. The Everett Firefighters Association frequently donates the use of its assembly hall to local nonprofit organizations.

Elks hoop shooters win state competition
Representing Everett Elks Lodge 479, Katherine Stack and Tyson Human each won first place in the age 8-9 division at the Washington State Elks Association Hoop Shoot Free Throw Competition on Feb. 9 in Bellevue.
Katherine, who attends Mukilteo Elementary, shot 21 out of 25 to win the girls' title.
Tyson, who attends Kent Prairie Elementary in Arlington, shot 15 out of 25.
The hoop shooters earned the right to compete at the state contest by winning the district competition Jan. 26 in Mount Vernon. They will compete again at the regional level March 1 in Portland, Ore.
Mukilteo families benefit from goal
The Mukilteo Association of Classified Personnel is making good on a goal set earlier this school year.
"We wanted to support families in the Mukilteo School District," said Rubye Hayden, Mariner High School custodian and a vice president of the organization.
In December the association provided gifts, toiletries, household supplies and food to four families in the Mukilteo School District. Gifts for children included toys and games. Parents received gift certificates for food and other essentials such as sheets and blankets.
The association's food drive in January and February brought in almost 2,500 pounds of food for a local food bank. Picnic Point Elementary School was especially involved in the drive, association members said.
The association's membership includes custodial, secretarial, transportation, information technology, maintenance, graphics, grounds, security and food service employees.
Snohomish food bank accepts donation
Snohomish Community Food Bank recently received a donation of 1,110 pounds of chicken breasts from Snohomish TOP Food & Drug and supplier Smart Chicken.
The chicken, with a retail value of about $7,600, should help the food bank serve its clients for two to three months, said food bank executive director Daryl Bertholet.
Snohomish TOP Food & Drug, which donates produce and baked goods each week, also helped raise $15,000 in December for the food bank.
For information about the food bank, call 360-568-7993 or go to www.SnohomishCommunityFoodBank.org.
Warm Beach women honor their elders
The women's ministry group of Warm Beach Free Methodist Church recently hosted a tea for 30 women of the Warm Beach Senior Community. The seniors honored at the tea were all age 90 and older, with four of the women in attendance older than 100.
Each guest was matched with a younger hostess who escorted her and together they enjoyed tea, conversation and an inspirational program.
"Through the tea the older women were honored for their long, rich lives and the younger women were enriched from a delightful hour spent with their guests," Ginger Kauffman, of Warm Beach Free Methodist, said.
EvCC students to be honored by state
Everett Community College students Laura Jungbauer and Melissa Wax will be honored March 20 by Gov. Chris Gregoire for their inclusion on the Washington All-Academic Team.
The two are among 62 team members from the state's 34 community and technical colleges. The award honors outstanding students who have a demonstrated commitment to success in the classroom and in the communities where they live.
The women will receive $750 scholarships funded by the Northwest Education Loan Association and KeyBank, and are eligible for additional scholarships at state colleges and universities.
Jungbauer, 38, of Everett, plans to transfer from EvCC to Western Washington University's Huxley College to earn her degree in environmental science.
She's a single mom of two daughters, ages 6 and 8, and is involved in their Girl Scout troops, the Everett Community College Student Senate and the campus MESSA Mountaineers club. Jungbauer also assists during the Washington State Science Olympiad and maintains trails with the Washington Trail Association.
Wax, 28, of Marysville, plans to transfer to the University of Washington. She's majoring in photography, with a focus on other fine arts disciplines, including oil painting and drawing.
She's also studying German. She hopes to eventually attend the Academy of Visual Arts in Leipzig, Germany. Wax is president of the Art Alliance, a volunteer for Purrfect Pals cat adoption center and a member of honor society Phi Theta Kappa. She and her husband are expecting their first child in August.
