Lake Stevens sprinters dressed for success

LAKE STEVENS — It would appear — at least for the Lake Stevens boys track team — that the clothes do in fact make the man.

Jeff Page, the Vikings’ head track coach, had been looking for one-piece purple and yellow speed suits for several years with little success.

He finally found a company that would custom-make the suits in Lake Stevens colors and his athletes debuted them Saturday with remarkable results.

Lake Stevens athletes won seven events and placed second in five others to win the boys team title at the Viking Classic for the third year in a row with 146 points — downing second-place Arlington by more than 60 points.

“We had a pretty good day,” Page said. “We had a lot of PRs (personal records) and the kids competed real well.”

Page was particularly pleased with Vikings’ 400-meter relay squad of Isaac Molstre, Dustin Adams, James Little and Tyler Reside.

“They ran as fast today as I thought they would run at the end of the year,” Page said. “We got those new speed suits and they ran speedy.”

The team recorded a time of 43.72 seconds, which puts it among the top-10 times recorded this season, according to www.athletic.net, a high school track website.

Lake Stevens received two victories from Brennan Frost: 21 feet, 9 inches in the long jump and 6-3 in the high jump. The Vikings also received victories from Colton Tupen in the 110 hurdles (15.56), Molstre in the 200 (22.77), Kyle VanSanten in the 3,200 (9:35.35) and Kelly Kurisu in the shot put (50-4).

Edmonds-Woodway’s Antoinne Wafer won the 400 (50.64) and teamed with Matt Pirie, Yonathan Yilma and Calvin Grover to win the 1,600 relay.

Shorecrest’s Roy McElmurry won the pole vault (14-0) and teammate Marek Domanski won the discus (162-7).

Arlington’s Marcus Dolan won the 100 (11.21) and teammate Bryan Mack won the triple jump (46-10.5). Mack was named “Athlete of the Meet” after finishing third in the 100 and second in both the long jump and the 400 relay.

Lake Stevens also won the combined competition, which is determined by adding the overall team scores from both the boys and girls competitions.
