Free today: Southern-style chicken sandwiches at McDonald's

Chick, chick everywhere: McDonald's has recently unveiled two life-changing menu items -- the Southern Style Chicken Sandwich and, for folks who have the good sense to eat fried chicken for breakfast, the Southern Style Chicken Biscuit.

Today, McDonald's 14,000 U.S. stores will give away the sandwiches with a medium or large beverage purchase.

This wouldn't really be news, of course, if both the sandwiches weren't incredibly well-executed knockoffs of two very similar sandwiches invented by the Atlanta-based fast food chain Chick-fil-A.

Though Chick-fil-A is hugely successfully in 37 other states, Washington is, we regret, not one of them, leaving fans of Southern-style chicken sandwiches at a serious loss, not unlike fans of other regional chains that haven't made it to the Northwest, such as Waffle House, Steak 'n Shake and Whataburger.

McDonald's, according to our Southern sources, has come remarkably close to duplicating the Chick-fil-A signature sandwich. It's a white-meat chicken patty, instead of a robust filet, but it is served on a buttery bun with nothing but pickles -- no mayo -- just like a Chick-fil-A.

At a mere 420 calories, 19 grams of fat and 1 gram of fiber, this might be McDonald's smartest move since the McFlurry.

Could waffle fries be next?
