Then a curious ruling by the officials made his day even longer. Nevertheless, it was a good day for the Lakewood High School junior. Smith qualified for state in three events, including winning a title in the 400-meter run, on the final day of the 2A District 1 boys track and field championships Friday at Cedarcrest High School. "It was all right," Smith said about his day, panting heavily from what eventually turned out to be a five-race day. "I was a little slow in the 400, but otherwise it was good." Smith was one of two Lakewood individual champions. Teammate Nathan Hesselman joined him on the top step of the podium after winning the high jump. Those wins led the Cougars to the team title. Lakewood finished with 102 points, edging out Sehome by one. Smith was already dragging after anchoring Lakewood's 1,600-meter relay team in the meet's final event, carrying the Cougars to a second-place finish. However, a collision during one of the earlier legs knocked out the top-seeded Lynden team, resulting in a protest and the officials decided to re-run the race completely. After waiting a half hour to allow the racers a brief rest. A weary Smith achored Lakewood to second again in a race that finished in near darkness after 9 p.m. That just added to Smith's tally from the night. First, Smith won the 400 in a time of 49.61 seconds, powering through the final turn to take the lead down the stretch, then maintaining his lead the rest of the way. "The first time I raced (the 400) was last year," said Smith, who was happy with the title but somewhat disappointed with his time. "It just kind of works better for me, I guess. I tried the 100 and 200, but I could never get going quite fast enough. "I'm kind of scared of that race," Smith added about the 400. "It's hard and it's long and I have four events in the day, so it wears me out." Smith then surprised himself by placing second in the 200 in a personal-best time of 22.60, just seven one-hundredths of a second behind winner Logan Darling of Bellingham. For Hesselman, a sophomore, all he wanted to do was give his father Russ a birthday present. He ended up doing that, also giving himself a little gift in the process by setting a personal best at 6 feet, 3 inches. Hesselman was full of energy and smiles during the competition, giving a leap and a holler when he cleared 6-2 on his first attempt to take the lead. Then it was a fist pump and another big grin after he leapt 6-3 for the first time in competition. "I was really nervous coming into it because I hadn't had a good day of practice before this," Hesselman said. "Then the first jump felt good, all the other guys were really supportive, and six of us are going to state (having met the 6-foot automatic qualifying mark). "Today's my dad's birthday, so I told him I'd win a district championship for his birthday," Hesselman added. "Right when I got to 6-2 and everyone else was going out I got real excited." Hesselman just beat out Sultan senior John Grossi, who finished second at 6-2. Smith and Hesselman led a solid all-around performance by the Cougars. Sophomore Taylor Guske finished second in the 3,200 with a time of 9:47.16. Then juniors Payden Butler and Cameron Hess finished 2-3 in the javelin with throws of 160-7 and 158-7, respectively. Granite Falls' top placer was senior Joel Erickson, who finished third in the shot put at 50-1.5.
