2A GIRLS TRACK: Archbishop Murphy's Schireman captures two district crowns
By Nick Patterson Herald Writer
DUVALL -- Sarah Schireman was steaming.
Already annoyed by technical issues at the long-jump pit, the Archbishop Murphy High School junior's mood was worsened when she was nipped at the line during the 100-meter hurdles.
However, that just spelled trouble for her opponents in her other two individual events.
Schireman shook off her early setbacks to win titles in the 300 hurdles and long jump, highlighting the second day of the 2A District 1 girls track and field championships Friday at Cedarcrest High School.
Schireman was outleaned by Burlington-Edison's Chelsea Genther by two one-hundredths of a second in the 100 hurdles, just the second running event of the day.
But she recovered to win the long jump with a leap of 18 feet, 1.5 inches, then got her revenge on Genther in the 300 hurdles, winning in a time of 45.39 seconds.
"It was really hard for me because I had some issues at the long-jump pit before with some mix-up, so I came over (to the 100 hurdles) a little bit angry and didn't have time to warm up," Schireman explained. "That was a bit difficult, then losing by a couple inches to a girl I thought I had beat was really tough mentally. But I just figured I had to keep moving and get it back in the long jump and 300, which I did, so it was really good."
After the 100 hurdles, Schireman returned to the long-jump pit and unleashed her winning jump in the final of her three qualifying jumps. The distance excited her so much that her celebration nearly spilled into the adjacent boys triple-jump ramp just as a competitior was about to take off.
"I hadn't broke 18-feet yet this year (she jumped 18-6 last year), so just getting to that 18-foot mark again was really exciting to me to prove to myself I could get back up there," Schireman said.
Then in the 300 hurdles, Schireman cruised through most of the race. However, when Genther began gaining on her on the inside, she kicked it up a gear over the final two hurdles to win comfortably.
"The 300, that was my big revenge," Schireman said. "I saw (Genther) coming up the last 100 and saw her out of the corner of my eye, so it really pushed me."
Burlington-Edison lapped the field for the team title with a score of 144.5.
South Whidbey's Cayla Calderwood added two more district titles to the one she won Wednesday in the triple jump. The sophomore first won the javelin with a throw of 115-1, then was a part of South Whidbey's victorious 800 relay team in a time of 1:46.24. She also qualified for state in the long jump by placing fourth in 16-10.25.
Lauren Sandri, also a member of South Whidbey's winning 800 relay team, finished first in the 200 in 27.78.
Lakewood's Tawnya Hulslander qualified for state in two events. The senior placed third in both the javelin (109-2) and shot put (36-3), meaning she'll compete at state in all three throwing events. Fellow Lakewood senior Sarah Dunn finished second in the 1,600 at 5:18.04. She'll compete at state in both the 1,600 and 3,200.
Sultan's top competitor was senior Breianna O'Hara, who placed third in the 100 hurdles at 15.59.
