PREP ROUNDUP: Doubles team leads Edmonds-Woodway to district title

MILL CREEK -- Amanda Waldron and Michelle Nelson of Edmonds-Woodway defeated Mackenzie Bang and Lisa Hamman of Shorewood 7-6 (7-4), 7-5, in the 4A District 1 doubles championship. With the help of teammate Kira Kearsley, the runner-up in singles, Waldron and Nelson were able to earn a team title for Edmonds-Woodway Friday at Jackson High School.

Elaine Baik of Kamiak was nearly perfect in the singles championship against Kearsley, defeating her 6-1, 6-0. Baik, the No. 1 seed from the Wesco South going into the tournament, won all three of her matches in the tournament by the same score.

Baik, Kearsley and consolation bracket champion Anna Chatilo of Shorewood will all be heading to state with Danielle Elliott of Snohomish serving as the alternate.

In doubles, Waldron and Nelson, Bang and Hamman, as well as Brittany Millan and Kaitlyn Jones of Lake Stevens will all be heading to state with Melanie Bjornethun and Katie Melnyk of Snohomish being the alternates.

At Jackson H.S.

Team scores--Edmonds-Woodway 14, Shorewood 11, Kamiak 9, Snohomish 8, Lake Stevens 5, Stanwood 2, Cascade 1.

Singles

Championship (both to state)--Baik (Kamiak) def. Kearsley (E-W) 6-1, 6-0.

Consolation (losers out)--Elliott (Snohomish) def. Lee (Kamiak) 6-1, 7-6 (7-4); Chatilo (Shorewood) def. Hamiter (Stanwood) 6-3, 7-6 (7-3).

Third-Fourth place (winner to state, loser alternate)--Chatilo def. Elliott 6-2, 6-2.

Doubles

Championship (both to state)--Waldron-Nelson (E-W) def. Bang-Hamman (Shorewood) 7-6 (7-4), 7-5.

Consolation (losers out)--Bjornethun-Melnyk (Snohomish) def. Mack-Matsuzawa (Cascade) 7-6 (7-3), 4-6, 6-3; Millan-Jones (Lake Stevens) def. Welch-Pollock (Stanwood) 6-3, 6-1.

Third-Fourth place (winner to state, loser alternate)--Millan-Jones def. Bjornethun-Melnyk 6-3, injury default.

3A District 1 meet: At Arlington, Ivana Krommelova of Arlington swept her way to the singles title, defeating Alena Owen of Shorecrest 6-0, 6-0 in the final. Krommelova won three straight matches without dropping a game.

Julie Mills of Everett, last year's district champion, came back from a quarterfinal loss to Krommelova to reach the consolation final against Owen. Mills won three straight loser-out matches. Mills and Owen play for second place and a state berth today.

In the doubles final, Natalie Simpson and Kyoka Izawa of Shorecrest dispatched Sara Porteson and Lianne Fijalka of Meadowdale 5-7, 6-3, 6-2. Porteson and Fijalka earned the district's second seed to state based upon their semifinal win over consolation finalists Kelsey Monson and Lauren Olson of Shorecrest, who will be alternates to next weekend's state meet.

Championship (winner to state)--Krommelova (Arlington) def. Owen (Shorecrest) 6-0, 6-0.

Consolation (losers out)--Mills (Everett) def. Wilson (Squalicum) 6-3, 7-5; Pan (Shorecrest) def. Kinsolving (Mt. Vernon) 7-5, 1-6, 6-0; Mills def. Pan 6-2, 6-1.

Today's match

Second-third place (winner to state, loser alternate)--Owen vs. Mills.

Doubles

Championship (winner to state)--Simpson-Izawa (Shorecrest) def. Porteson-Fijalka (Meadowdale) 5-7, 6-3, 6-2.

Consolation (losers out)--Anne d'Aquino-Andrea d'Aquino (Squalicum) def. Burkholder-Galusha (Arlington) 6-4, 6-3; Monson-Olson (Shorecrest) def. Nguyen-Letourneau (Everett) 6-2, 6-2; Monson-Olson def. d'Aquina-d'Aquino 6-4, 2-6, 6-2

Second-third place (winner to state, loser alternate)--Porteson-Fijalka def. Monson-Olson in the semifinals.

Boys soccer

King's 2, Overlake 1: At Shoreline, Michael Kenyon assisted on both goals as King's advanced to the 1A state semifinals with a 2-1 quarterfinal win over Overlake.

Softball

Arlington 4, Ferndale 0: At Sedro-Woolley, Christina Rayner of Arlington struck out five of the 10 batters she faced in relief, giving up one hit and getting the win in the loser-out 3A District 1 consolation game.

Sedro-Woolley 9, Shorecrest 4: At Sedro-Woolley, Bailey Brewer of Sedro-Woolley was 4-for-4 with a double and two triples and also pitched a complete game. Alanna Schade had a two-run home run for Shorecrest in the 3A District 1 loser-out consolation game.
