Darrington High School hires two coaches

Darrington High School has hired Chad Monteith as its head football coach and Kevin Ashe as head boys basketball coach.

The Darrington School Board approved both hires Thursday night, district superintendent Larry Johnson said Monday.

Monteith replaces Fred Emerson, who retired at age 72. Monteith was a voluntary assistant on Emerson’s staff the past two seasons.

“I just couldn’t ask for a nicer person than Chad. He has a real heart for kids and understands Darrington and just puts the time and energy in to making this program (work) for our kids,” Johnson said of Monteith, who is also Darrington’s varsity wrestling coach.

Ashe steps in for Jeff Bryson, who in May resigned after leading the Loggers’ boys hoops program for 17 years. Bryson took an assistant coaching job at Arlington High school.

Ashe, a 1971 Darrington High graduate, was a voluntary assistant under Bryson and has been involved with the program more than a dozen years.

Said Ashe: “I want to try to continue the tradition that we’ve had of good solid teams — always competitive, hard-working boys.”
