That shouldn't change under Nick Wold. Wold has been named Monroe's head boys basketball coach. A Bearcats assistant coach the past five seasons, Wold replaces Brett Wille, who in April resigned to concentrate on his athletic director and assistant principal responsibilities at the school. Wold's hiring was approved Monday by the Monroe School Board, Wille said. Defense has been and will continue to be a mainstay of the program, said Wold: "It's what I teach, and it's what I teach well." Wold, a first-time head coach, is a 1998 Mariner High graduate who excelled in football and basketball. He teaches health at Monroe High. Asked about his goals for the program, Wold, Monroe's junior-varsity coach the past three years, said: "Our main philosophy is build success. We want to be able to shape it and mold it for each player." Last season Monroe was 10-6 in Western Conference North Division games and 13-7 overall. The Bearcats nearly qualified for the Class 4A District 1 tournament but lost a tiebreaker with Stanwood and Lake Stevens. Monroe is expected to return only one starter, senior-to-be guard Tim Ohlsen. It must replace forwards James MacIntyre and Jason Waltman, seniors who earned All-Wesco North first-team and second-team honors, respectively. "We're going to be young and real inexperienced to start," Wold said. The 2008-09 team will lean on Ohlsen, who "has been playing lights out basketball so far this summer," said Wold. Wold is organized and has a good vision for where he wants to take the program, Wille said. "He expects a lot out of kids. He gets (them) to play really hard," said Wille. Wold, a former point guard, was a four-year varsity-team starter at Mariner and earned all-league quarterback honors in football. He had been an assistant football coach at Monroe five seasons but said he'll give that up and focus on basketball. Wold said he looks forward to maintaining a respected program previously guided by Wille, Monroe's head coach the last seven years. "He's done a fantastic job," Wold said of Wille. Shorewood hires boys basketball coach: Marv Morris was hired to be the new boys basketball coach at Shorewood High School Tuesday. Morris replaces Shawn Hall, who resigned earlier this month to coach at Cleveland High School. Prior to taking last season off, Morris coached seven seasons at King's High School.
