Home front: Grow your own organically
What:
Organic vegetables may flourish on your patio or balcony thanks to the EarthBox. The compact box comes packaged with soil, fertilizer and dolomite that have been registered as organic by the Organic Materials Review Institute, an Oregon nonprofit group.
Advantages:
Along with providing a starter kit with registered organic items, the EarthBox is designed to trap moisture to reduce water consumption. Basically, seedlings draw only the water they need from the EarthBox's reservoir, according to the company. Also, the box's size -- 29 inches long, 13 1/2 inches wide, 11 inches high -- gives ample room for produce to grow. Still, if you have questions about how many seedlings should go into the soil, the company's Web site provides the quantity of specific fruits and vegetables that can be planted.
Limitations:
While it's easy to understand someone's being turned off by grotesquely enlarged, pesticide-enhanced produce at the grocery, it seems like the issue would be of less concern when you're dealing with items you grew yourself. Organic soil and fertilizer aside, someone gardening in a backyard box may not be worried about eating an unknown chemical when they themselves grew the produce. And while reducing water consumption is nice, it's hardly a paramount concern in the Northwest.
