Feierabend joins in
For the next five days the AquaSox are receiving an infusion of major-league talent.
Pitcher Ryan Feierabend, who appeared for the Seattle Mariners in each of the past two seasons, will be spending that time with the Sox as he makes two rehabilitation starts for Everett.
“It’s going to be real good for us because he’s a triple-A guy with major-league experience,” Everett manager Jose Moreno said.
Feierabend, a 22-year-old left-hander, received a cup of coffee with the Mariners in 2006, then appeared in 13 games (nine starts) with Seattle last season, going 1-6 with an 8.03 ERA.
Feierabend began this season with Class AAA Tacoma and was very effective, going 4-1 with a 2.15 ERA in eight starts before being sidelined in May with forearm soreness.
After a spending more than a month on the sidelines Feierabend began working himself back, starting on July 5 with Peoria of the rookie Arizona League. He appeared twice for Peoria, giving up two earned runs in 42/3 innings.
“It’s nothing serious,” Everett pitching coach Jack Uhey said of Feierabend’s injury. “It’s just a little bit of a tired forearm, flexor is what they call it, maybe a bit of inflammation in there. But he’s had no discomfort at all coming back.”
Feierabend started for Everett on Monday. He will travel with the team following the current three-game homestand against Eugene, and he’s scheduled to start again on Saturday at Salem-Keizer. The plan is for Feierabend to build himself up to five or six innings by Saturday. If all goes well he may be ready to return to Tacoma upon completion of his time with the Sox.
“His last time out (for Peoria last Wednesday) he threw four innings with 36 pitches,” Uhey said. “He’ll probably go five (Monday) with 70 pitches. Then we’ll probably be a be able to stretch him out further the next time around.
“We’re being cautious, but any time you’re going to throw 70 pitches in a game you’re on your way back.”
Turnover: There’s been a slew of roster changes since Everett was last home.
Those Sox lost their most effective starting pitcher when Brett Lorin was promoted to Wisconsin of the mid Class A Midwest League. In five starts with the Sox Lorin went 1-0 with a 2.82 ERA, striking out 29 in 221/3 innings.
Taking Lorin’s place were a pair of right-handers, Kenn Kasparek and Brad Reid.
Kasparek, a 22-year-old from Weimer, Texas, was Seattle’s 12th-round pick in this year’s draft out of the University of Texas. The 6-foot-10 Kasparek had been playing at Pulaski of the short-season Class A Appalachian League, where in four starts he went 3-0 with a 2.70 ERA. Kasparek slotted into Lorin’s spot in the rotation and threw five scoreless innings in his Everett debut Sunday at Tri-City.
Reid, a 20-year-old from Federal Way, was Seattle’s 30th-round pick this year out of Bellevue Community College. Reid had been playing at High Desert of the high Class A California League, where in six relief appearances he was 0-1 with a 14.73 ERA.
Everett also saw some movement among its catching corps. Fleming Baez was promoted to Tacoma to help fill in for injuries. Baez had been batting .289 in 11 games for Everett. Meanwhile, Henry Contreras, who began the season with the Sox, returned from his stint with Peoria, where he appeared in just two games.
Moreno said the arrangement is expected to last at least a week. If everything goes as planned, both Baez and Contreras will eventually return to their previous locations.
