4-H club helps buy police K-9 vest

Dogs of Greater Standard or D.O.G.S 4-H Club in Lynnwood recently donated more than $700 toward Lynnwood police dog "Vader's" body armor vest.

For more than two years, members of the club have been collecting funds through their work at the Seattle Kennel Club.

A typical ballistic vest for a dog costs more than $2,000. Each tactical vest is custom-made to the measurements of the dog and is a specialized piece of equipment.

Lynnwood police currently have three active police dog teams: officer Curtis Zatylny and Vader, officer Cole Langdon and "Buddy," and Sgt. Jason Valentine and "Sandor."

Lynnwood police and other police departments in South Snohomish County need new vests as their dog units expand or other dogs retire.

Marysville employees honor reservist

Employees of G.A. Maxwell's restaurant in Marysville recently held a celebration in honor of fellow employee Paul Ryba, a reservist who has been assigned to Iraq. The crew celebrated with a lemon torte dessert topped with fresh strawberries.

Those who participated in the event included Scott Bibeau, Donna Jones, Richard and Michael Butner, Brent Ballard, Rachel Bayley, Bruce Anderson, Jacob Reiss Becky Wells, Jason Gerlach and daughter Guadalup, Amy McGifford, Robin Nichols, Lorraine Anderson, and Julie Launceford.

Emblem Club holds wine fund raiser

The Everett Emblem Club No. 523, an auxiliary of the Elks, recently held its first wine tasting fundraiser at Normanna Hall since the Elks lodge was demolished to make way for new construction.

Emblem members Carrie and David Lienhard, Janet Levi, Carol Croddy, Marcella Henske, Gary Croddy, Lee Lienhard, and Henry Levi attended the event.

The Elks and Emblem Club's lodge is under construction so events are held in temporary locations.

Challenger Wines of Concrete provided wine for the fundraiser. The Tulalip Tribes, the Stillaguamish Tribes, Flowers by George and O'Brien's Restaurant provided prizes to raffle during the event.

Forest steward inspector of the year

John Keller, a forest stewardship coordinator with the Department of Natural Resources, recently was named Washington Inspector of the Year by the Washington Tree Farm Program. Keller works in parts of Snohomish County from his Sedro Woolley office.

Lions Club installs officers, directors

The Everett Central Lions Club recently installed new officers and directors for the 2008-09 year. Merry Goshorn, retired Bethany Northwest executive, was named president.

Other officers include: Paul Sjunnesen, vice president; Linda Beecher, second vice president; Art Ruben, secretary and Bob Hallberg, treasurer. Named to the board of directors are: Ken Beecher, Gary Councilman, Jim Horton, Chuck Patten and Troy Woodard, the club's immediate past president.

Everett firefighters attend safety training

The Everett Fire Department recently participated in a weeklong Fire and Emergency Management Services Safety, Health, and Survival Week. The program was sponsored by the International Association of Fire Chiefs and the International Association of Fire Fighters.

Fire administrators and firefighters from across the nation participated in the annual event. Activities focused on training to help minimize fire and emergency personnel's risk of injury or death.

Arlington club names Reno Raffle winner

The Old Bags of Arlington Woman's Club recently presented $400 to Jay Carey, winner of the club's annual Reno Raffle. Sherry Cox, president, presented the award. Carey has the option of choosing a trip to Reno or the cash.

The Old Bags of Arlington Woman's Club has several fundraisers each year. All money raised goes to help needy families.

Monroe food bank receives grant

The Sky Valley Food Bank and Matthew House of Monroe recently received a grant from the Coastal Community Bank Employee Giving Fund. The Sky Valley Food Bank also received a grant from the bank's Endowment Fund in Honor of Bob Drewel.

Linda Paz, Matthew House executive director, and Gerri Parker, administrative volunteer for the Sky Valley Food Bank, attended a celebration at Coastal Community Bank to accept the awards on behalf of their organizations.

Senior center names new director

The Warm Beach Senior Community recently named Laurence Foss as its executive director. Foss, 57, has spent the last nine years at Warm Beach Senior Community, the last three serving as chief operating officer. Foss is a certified public accountant and holds a Washington state nursing home administrator's license. He serves on the Board of Aging Services of Washington, the association of nonprofit retirement homes in the state. Foss, a native of Everett now resides on Camano Island. He replaces David Fairchild, who is retiring after serving 17 years as executive director.

Warm Beach Senior Community, a ministry of the Free Methodist Church, has been serving seniors for 41 years. The community has 350 residents and operates a health care center independent living apartments, manufactured homes and an assisted living facility.

Marysville YMCA receives $1,000

The Marysville-North County Family YMCA recently received a donation of 31 personal floating devices worth $1,000 through a grant from West Marine. The devices are slated to be used in YMCA swim lesson programs to help teach boating safety.

United Way names new manager

The United Way of Snohomish County recently named Michelle Morris senior manager of its volunteer center. Morris previously worked for the Eastern Washington 211 call center in Spokane where she served as the site's manager.

A native of Olympia, Morris has a bachelor's degree in psychology from Washington State University.
