Shoreline man in hospital after jump from I-5 overpass

A 66-year-old Shoreline man was listed in critical condition Sunday after he jumped, the State Patrol said, from an overpass onto I-5 in Mountlake Terrace.

The man jumped from the 236th Street overpass onto a southbound lane of I-5 at 9:19 a.m. and was hit by a semi truck, according to the State Patrol.

“We had witness accounts that this person simply jumped off the side, and there’s no reason behind it, we don’t have notes or anything that was left,” State Patrol Trooper Keith Leary said.

The man was taken to Harborview Medical Center. The driver of the truck, a 57-year-old man from Prince George, B.C., was not injured.

The freeway was completely closed initially and the traffic backup reached four miles long, according to the state Department of Transportation. Traffic then was allowed to pass through on reduced lanes. The freeway was fully reopened by about 10:10 a.m., he said.
