Former Snohomish County lawmaker indicted for fraud
Herald Staff
SEATTLE -- A former Snohomish County lawmaker and attorney has been indicted in federal court for mail fraud.
Paul H. King, 58, formerly of Mountlake Terrace, was arrested Monday in Arlington, according to officials with the U.S. Attorney's Office in Seattle.
A federal grand jury indicted King last month in connection with a scheme to defraud the state Employment Securities Department by filing false unemployment claims. King is accused of being paid more than $12,000 in unemployment benefits that he wasn't entitled to, according to the federal indictment.
According to court documents, King allegedly applied for a business license and falsely claimed he was an employee at the business, called "Stephen's Sales and Service," from 2002 to 2004. He later applied for and received unemployment benefits, totalling nearly $13,000.
King sent a check in 2005 for $12,480 to refund the money, according to court records.
Prosecutors also allege that King filed false claims on behalf of his former domestic partner's daughter. She was paid more than $12,800, according to court documents.
King, a Democrat, served as a legislator for the 44th District in the 1980s. He also practiced law in Snohomish and King counties. According to the Washington State Bar Association Web site, King's law office is listed in the Philippines but he is no longer practicing law.
He is being held in federal detention pending a hearing later this week.
