Two Tips achieve milestone goals
By Nick Patterson Herald Writer
EVERETT -- On Saturday night Markus McCrea and Tyler Maxwell each hit a milestone, scoring their first goals in the WHL.
The Everett Silvertips hope it's just the first of many.
The young forwards, both of whom are expected to develop into contributors at some point in their WHL careers, each came away with a memento during Everett's 7-3 victory over Seattle.
McCrea, a 16-year-old from Canyon Lake, Calif., scored his goal at the end of the first period to make it 2-0. Breaking into the offensive zone two-on-one, McCrea decided to shoot himself and fired a bullet into the top corner.
"It was exciting," McCrea said. "I was planning on passing, but I decided to take the shot.
"It's an amazing feeling," McCrea added. "The adrenaline was still going, even when we were in the locker room after we were done."
For McCrea the goal had been coming. He had glorious scoring chances in each of Everett's first three games, only to be thwarted either by an incredible save or by the post.
"Everybody said, 'You're getting a lot of chances, just keep shooting,'" McCrea said. "If you keep up the chances eventually they're going to go in."
Maxwell, a 17-year-old from Manhattan Beach, Calif., got his midway through the third period, putting a loose puck into the net on the power play to make it 5-3. His goal was crucial as Seattle, which trailed 4-0, had pulled back within one.
"I was just in front of the net, there was a scrum, the puck was on the post and I kind of pulled it back and put it in," Maxwell explained. "It was a pretty dirty goal.
"It felt awesome," added Maxwell, who was one of Everett's top producers during the preseason. "It's like a weight off your shoulders getting that first one out of the way."
Everett coach John Becanic was happy not only to see McCrea and Maxwell get their first WHL goals, but to see so many different players find the net. Everett's seven goals Saturday were scored by seven different players, and nine different players have found the net for the Tips so far.
"It's nice to go through the individual statistics and see almost everybody's got a point," Becanic said. "It might have taken us 30 games last year before we had that. So we have everybody contributing.
"It makes us harder to defend," Becanic continued. "I don't know if teams would go, 'Well, there's Everett's No. 1 line.' I think we've got four pretty balanced lines, and two or three of them can create a lot of offense at any given point."
New test: Spirits are high in the Tips camp. Everett's youthful roster got its first taste of victory last weekend, sweeping its games against Portland and Seattle.
However, this week a sterner test confronts the Tips.
First, Everett faces Kelowna tonight and Spokane on Friday, the teams predicted to win the B.C. and U.S. Divisions, respectively. Second, the Tips face these teams on the road rather than within the friendly confines of Comcast Arena, where their most recent success took place.
"We're a little more happy with the way we're playing, and there seems to be a little better attitude in the locker room," Everett defenseman Graham Potuer said.
"But playing on the road is a lot harder than playing at home," Potuer added. "Obviously you don't have the crowd on your side. But you just have to go out and be physical and work as hard as you can. And these two teams are really good teams. I think the defense is going to be especially challenged by both these teams."
Slap shots: Everett will be without right wing Matthew Ius for this week's games. Ius, who suffered a concussion during Friday's contest, appears to be progressing well. However, the concussion protocol requires a seven-day waiting period, meaning Ius will not return until Everett's home game against Seattle on Oct. 10 at the earliest. ... Tips winger Kyle Beach made his third preseason appearance for the NHL's Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday night. The Tips still have received no word on when or if Beach, Everett's leading returning scorer, will be sent back to the team.
