Prep standouts can sign NCAA letters beginning Wednesday

Wednesday marks the start of the early NCAA signing period for many prep athletes. Seniors who compete in sports including basketball (boys and girls), baseball, softball and volleyball can sign a binding National Letter of Intent and officially agree to attend a particular four-year college or university.

Some local student-athletes expected to sign are Snohomish girls basketball teammates Katie Benson (Seattle Pacific University), Karley Lampman (Portland State University) and Ally Schmitt (Montana State University); Kamiak girls basketball player Kelsey Patrick (Pepperdine University); baseball players Brian Wolfe of Snohomish and Chase Anselment of Meadowdale (both University of Washington); and Monroe volleyball player Kylin Munoz (BYU).

Look in The Herald Thursday for a list of signers from area high schools. To report signings, send an e-mail to mcane@heraldnet.com

The early signing period for previously mentioned sports continues through Nov. 19. The signing period for football, soccer, track and field, and cross country begins in February.

Rough weekend for 4A Wesco football teams

First there were six. Now only one remains.

Five of the six Western Conference football teams that participated in the 4A quad-district playoffs this past weekend endured season-ending defeats. The only winner was Wesco South No. 1 seed Jackson, which rallied late for a 16-10 victory against Tahoma. Jackson (9-1) travels to Spokane this week to play Ferris (9-1). Their first-round state playoff game is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday at Albi Stadium.

Stahl’s soccer connection

Everett defender Valerie Stahl helped the Seagulls beat Shorecrest 2-0 Thursday in the 3A District 1 girls soccer championship. In the process, Stahl beat the sister of her future college coach. Stahl has verbally committed to play for Cleveland State University, coached by Derrek Falor — the brother of Shorecrest girls soccer coach Mindy Dalziel.

Lakewood’s helping hands

Lakewood junior Taylor Guske stumbled through the finishers’ chute Saturday after the 2A boys race during the state cross country championships in Pasco. Guske, who placed 16th, collapsed to his knees, his head hanging near the grass. His teammate Nick Devier reached down, picked up Guske and fed him water. It was the essence of team unity. Said Devier, who finished ninth on the 3.1-mile course: “He was there for me when I had the hard times, and I’m here for him when he has the hard races.”

Double Team poll results

Last week on HeraldNet.com readers answered this question: So far this fall, what was the best prep football game involving local teams? The poll was based on games played through Oct. 31. The winner, with 33 percent of votes, was Jackson’s 50-49 overtime victory over Lake Stevens on Oct. 3. The runner-up was the Snohomish versus Lake Stevens Halloween clash (18 percent of votes), which Snohomish won 49-48. To participate in prep sports polls go to heraldnet.com/doubleteam.
