Cascade Chamber showcases CSO talents

Cascade Symphony's Cascade Chamber Orchestra will showcase the talents of several of its individual members in its performance on Nov. 24 at the Edmonds Center for the Arts.

Music Director Michael Miropolsky and Concertmaster James Garlick will take the stage in Vivaldi's "Concerto in A Minor for Two Violins." Also featured will be CSO Principal Flute Jennifer Mahaffey in "A Night Piece" by Arthur Foote and Principal Trumpet George Steward in Michael Haydn's "Trumpet Concerto No. 2 in C Major." The program will conclude with the "Symphony No. 4 in C Minor (Tragic)" by Schubert.

James Garlick, a Washington native, joined the Cascade Symphony in 2007. He is a 2006 graduate of the Oberlin Conservatory where he was frequently concertmaster of the Oberlin Orchestras and Oberlin Contemporary Music Ensemble. He has also earned a bachelor's degree in neuroscience from Oberlin College, and maintains an interest in the neurobiology of music. Currently, Garlick is an auditory neurobiology scientist at the University of Washington School of Medicine.

Jennifer Mahaffey is in her third season as Principal Flute with the Cascade Symphony Orchestra. Mahaffey also performs with the Tacoma Symphony and the Bellevue Philharmonic and frequently presents recitals with the Convergence Chamber Players. She maintains a private flute studio and is active as a freelance musician. Mahaffey attended the University of Washington, where she obtained a degree in German Language and a Minor in Music.

George Steward earned his Bachelor's degree in trumpet performance from Wheaton College Conservatory and a Master's degree in trumpet performance from the Yale School of Music. This is his second year with Cascade Symphony. He has been principal trumpet in the Everett Symphony for the past seven seasons and is a member of Northwest Herald Trumpets, the Brass Reflections quintet, and the pop/rock Andy Werth band. He freelances throughout the Puget Sound area, teaches privately, and coaches through the schools.
