EDMONDS — It was only fitting that foul shots determined the outcome of Thursday’s non-league game between Edmonds-Woodway and Everett. Each team was charged with more than 20 fouls en route to the Warriors’ 66-63 victory over Everett at Edmonds-Woodway High School.
Edmonds-Woodway led for most of the game but Everett narrowed the gap in the final minutes of the fourth quarter on a layup. But a string of fouls by the Seagulls allowed Edmonds-Woodway, which hit 16 of 19 free throws in the final period, to regain the lead.
“It was a real aggressive game,” Edmonds-Woodway head coach Todd Rubin said. “Both teams played really hard and it came down to a few plays at the end.”
Edmonds-Woodway’s Kenan Polovina, a senior forward, led the Warriors with 20 points.
“He did a nice job at the line with eight out of 10 free throws,” Edmonds-Woodway assistant coach Jason Courter said.
Everett senior Flynn Mattson led all scorers with 31 points.

Bainbridge 48, Meadowdale 46: At Lynnwood, A Meadowdale rally fell just short as the Mavericks lost to Bainbridge in their non-conference season opener. After trailing by as many as eight points with two and a half minutes remaining, Roger O’Neill led a Meadowdale charge with 12 of his 22 points coming in the final quarter. O’Neill hit a 3-pointer with 26 seconds remaining to tie the score. Bainbridge then hit a fadeaway as time expired to win the contest. Connor Hamlett also had a solid opening game for Meadowdale with 17 points.

South Whidbey 50, Interlake 47: At Langley, South Whidbey was charged with a technical foul and personal foul simultaneously with 18 seconds remaining, and the Falcons’ eight-point lead fell to two. But the Falcons escaped with the non-conference win by sinking free throws late in the game. The Falcons were up 24-12 in the second quarter, the largest lead of the game, and held off Interlake until the fourth quarter. South Whidbey was 10-for-10 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter and 21-for-25 overall. Riley Newman had seven points in the fourth quarter and Chris Carey had 11 points in the second half and 14 overall to lead South Whidbey.
