Lake Stevens Scout earns Eagle rank

Lake Stevens Scout Beau Maben, who is a member of Boy Scout Troop No. 41, recently achieved the rank of Eagle Scout.

Maben, 18, started Scouts as a second-grader in Pack No. 45 at Machias Elementary School. He also attended Centennial Middle School and Snohomish High School. Maben is currently attending the University of Washington, where he is studying computer science and engineering. His parents are Doug and Sherri Maben.

For his Eagle Scout project, Maben researched, constructed and installed an experimental roosting box for Vaux's swifts, a small, dark gray-brown migrating bird of the Pacific Northwest similar to the chimney swift.

Thousands of the birds had been using an old brick chimney on the top of Wagner Elementary School in Monroe. When the Pilchuck Audubon Society found out the school district might be forced to remove the chimney, they began looking for alternative roosting solutions for the birds.

Maben went to work on the roosting project in March. He spent 90 hours on the project and installed a 13-foot tower on the roof of the school.

This year the city of Monroe declared Sept. 6 as Vaux's Swifts Day.
