It's basically a program that connects girls to women in the technology field. If it's just girls, it's easier for them to ask questions. We have speakers come in and we'll go on field trips to see what they do at work." RUHI MANN, senior Tulalip gymnasium dedication rescheduled A new gymnasium on the Marysville Secondary Campus will be dedicated to Francis J. "Francy" Sheldon between Tulalip Heritage High School basketball games on Saturday night. The ceremony was originally scheduled for December, but was canceled because of snow. Sheldon was a member of the Tulalip Tribes and supported youth athletics. The dedication will take place between the 5 p.m. girls' game and the boys' game, which begins at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for senior citizens, visiting students and children. Edmonds schools host annual information fair The Edmonds School District is hosting its annual District Information Fair from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at Lynnwood High School, 3001 184th St. SW, Lynnwood. With kindergarten registration across the district opening Monday, it's a chance for families to find out more about registration, meet people from their neighborhood school and learn more about districtwide programs and opportunities. The fair is not just for kindergarten families. All local residents are welcome. The event includes many services offered in the district. For instance, visitors will have chance to talk with school board members, ride a school bus, learn about highly capable and vocational programs and meet representatives from local child-care programs. Marketing students hook up with Silvertips Students in Cascade and Henry M. Jackson high schools' sports marketing classes have enjoyed a hands-on partnership with the Everett Silvertips. To give the students work experiences, the Silvertips arranged with teachers Jodi Galli and Jennifer Chambers for a behind-the-scenes visit to the team's offices. Working with the Silvertips marketing staff, students learned about event planning and promotion by scheduling an Everett Public Schools Night for Friday. Tickets to the school district night are discounted, and some proceeds from ticket sales will benefit the sports marketing classes at each school. The 7 p.m. game is between the Silvertips and the Prince George Cougars. Discounts are available online only, and tickets must be ordered by Wednesday. Monroe seeks building committee volunteers Monroe is seeking volunteers to study the district's building needs. "Our schools are an important investment for this community," said John Mannix, Monroe School District's assistant superintendent for operations. "It is in everyone's best interest to ensure Monroe's youth have productive learning environments." District staff provide ongoing maintenance of school buildings, but more substantial work is primarily funded through voter-approved measures, such as a capital projects levy passed in 2008. That money is targeted to replace and repair such things as roofs and heating and ventilation systems. It also included money to restore the track surface at Bearcat Stadium. The work in 2007 of more than 50 volunteers laid the foundation for the 2008 capital projects levy. Teams of parents, school staff, local residents, business owners and civic leaders created a needs assessment list. That list will provide important information for the new committee. The 2009 effort will focus on several questions, such as: What middle school model is best for Monroe Public Schools? What are the most urgent needs that should be addressed in the next few years? What is the public's input and willingness to support the recommendations? Two volunteer panels are being formed: a steering committee that will meet about twice per month and an advisory council, which will meet less often. A recommendation is expected to be made to the school board by June. It will decide whether to place a measure on the ballot. Meetings begin Thursday. A schedule of future meetings is available on the district's Web site at www.monroe.wednet.edu.
