Prep wrestling: Edmonds-Woodway beats Mariner, wins dual-meet title

EVERETT -- Following an impressive dual-meet win on Jan. 22 over Jackson, Edmonds-Woodway wrestling head coach Mike Hanchett was anticipating his squad's upcoming meet with Mariner.

Hanchett said he and his team knew the meet would decide the championship of the Western Conference South. Even after Mariner lost to Kamiak in its previous dual meet, E-W still needed a win to clinch the title.

And the Warriors pulled through, earning their first Wesco South wrestling title since 1988 with a 38-27 win over Mariner Thursday night at Mariner High School.

"You can't take anything for granted," Hanchett said. "(The meet) went back and forth more than I thought it would."

Starting the meet at the 103-pound weight class, E-W jumped out to a 16-0 lead, but the Marauders climbed back and eventually took the lead, 18-16, after Austin Parker's pin of Loren Fuell in 1 minute, 40 seconds in the 140-pound class.

E-W's Steve Alfi turned the tables back in the Warriors' favor with a pin in the 145-pound class.

"That was a pivotal moment," Hanchett said.

Mariner closed the gap to 34-27 on Adam Nelson's pin of Alex Rutledge in the 215-pound class, but the lead was too much because only one match remained and E-W pulled out a major decision for the victory and the Wesco South crown.

Hanchett expects his crew to perform well at the district tournament.

"I think we're going to do very well," Hanchett said. "I think we'll place six to eight (wrestlers) into the state tournament."

The match was the last of Hanchett's 29-year coaching career.

"It was a great was to finish it out," he said.
