Biz week: Jobless mess

The county's unemployment rate soared to 9.9 percent at the end of February -- its highest level since 1984. Roughly 38,020 Snohomish County residents are searching for jobs. Local economist Donna Thompson doesn't see the situation improving soon simply because the Boeing Co., the county's largest employer, continues to issue layoff notices on a monthly basis. Boeing sent out 700 pink slips to Puget Sound workers Friday -- 458 to Machinists.

Small biz help: Snohomish County small businesses picked up tips on how to survive and thrive in a rough economy. Local business owners suggested new marketing strategies and tightening budgets.

The new store: The Everett Mall will get a new store: rue21. The teen specialty retailer has 450 stores in 41 states and plans to open 60 more in Washington and Oregon over the next five years. The Everett location opens April 2.

The Boeing bill: Rep. Mike Sells introduced a bill in Olympia this week to create an aerospace training center in Snohomish County. It's a nod to the Boeing Co., which has lobbied for more aerospace training and education opportunities in the state. Lawmakers fear Boeing may look to locate a second 787 jet line out of state.
