Drivers sue, say red-light camera tickets too costly

A group of drivers has filed a lawsuit against nearly 20 Washington cities that operate red-light cameras.

The drivers say the $124 fine for the ticket is excessive.

The suit filed Wednesday in King County Superior Court says the law requires tickets for infractions caught on camera to cost no more than parking tickets. The drivers want refunds and a court order against the cities.

They are Tacoma, Auburn, Bonney Lake, Bremerton, Burien, Federal Way, Fife, Issaquah, Lacey, Lake Forest Park, Lakewood, Lynnwood, Moses Lake, Puyallup, Renton, SeaTac, Seattle and Spokane.

The suit also names Monroe. That city passed an ordinance that allows red-light cameras, but the city doesn't have any yet. City leaders are waiting on permission from the state Department of Transportation to place cameras on intersections at U.S. 2 and Kelsey Street and U.S. 2 and Lewis Street.

Bonney Lake Mayor Neil Johnson told the News Tribune of Tacoma it followed the law. Bonney Lake no longer uses traffic cameras.
