RECENT HEADLINES
Perspective is easy to lose
News never goes on vacation. Not even to hike the Appalachian Trail. The headlines keep coming, so duck and cringe:
"Call for Sanford resignation grows louder in South Carolina."
Not loud enough. We can still hear him. Make it stop. Headlines we would like to see:
"Nation to Sanford: We're just not that into you."
"Nation to Sanford: Speak no more."
"Wife to Sanford: That does it." "Nation to wife: Finally."
News reports state that South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford "insists he can fall back in love with his wife, Jenny" and/or he "is trying to fall back in love with his wife, Jenny."
That's so beautiful. Hallmark is all over it with its new line of Emetic-Emote cards. Sample: I've met my soul mate/And it's not you/I'm in such a state/Oh, and governor, too.
n "Michael Jackson leaves estate to family."
That's fine, because it will fuel a million or so more headlines in the months and years to come. But in the sappy dreamers' alternate universe the tabloids would say:
"Jackson leaves Neverland as a haven for sick and abused children."
"Jackson leaves fully-funded foundation for children who really need plastic surgery."
"Jackson leaves the Beatles music catalogue to Paul McCartney."
n "NASA manager pitches a cheaper return-to-moon plan."
Warning, a generational reference: Is that the Ralph Kramden "To the moon, Alice, to the moon" plan? Or is it more like a budget airline type move, and the astronauts will have to pay to use the bathroom? It's not a one-way ticket, is it?
n "Annual Colorado State University and city of Fort Collins 'Great Sofa Roundup' canceled because of bedbugs."
The Roundup, in which people bring old couches to a parking lot for others to take for free, was started in 2001 when the city noticed used couches left in alleyways and disposed of improperly. Couches thrown out by college students? Bedbugs might not be the most offending thing on those lovely pieces of furniture.
n "Arizona Senate approves bill allowing guns in bars."
"It's very important that criminals are now afraid rather than law abiding citizens," said Sen. Jack Harper, R-Surprise, the bill's sponsor.
A spokesperson for criminals agreed that most criminals are now, indeed, very afraid.
n "Teen clung to Comoros plane wreckage for 13 hours."
The Yemenia Airbus A310 jet was carrying 153 people when it went down in howling winds early Tuesday in the sea north of the Comoros Islands. Bahia Bakari, 14, was the only survivor.
A little perspective never hurts.
