Theater's run starts with 'Alice'

It's time for the curtain to rise for members of Seattle Children's Theatre Drama School.

These newbie actors get a chance to present seven plays between July 16 and Aug. 8 as part of Seattle Children's Theatre's summer season of student productions.

Young actors ranging in age from 9 to 21 strut their stuff on stage in a diverse selection of plays while guided by an experienced director and other adult professionals to help them put on a high-quality show.

Each cast performs three times at Seattle Children's Theatre, 201 Thomas St., Seattle.

Tickets are $10 or $5 if purchasing 10 or more tickets for any combination of the shows. For tickets or for a complete summer schedule call 206-441-3322 or go to www.sct.org.

Summer shows:

"Alice in Wonderland": By Lewis Carroll. July 16 to 18. Ages 5 and up.

Alice sees a White Rabbit rushing along and follows the critter to Wonderland, where she meets many strange and curious creatures. At the Queen of Hearts' royal croquet party, Alice has to defend herself at a bizarre trial.

"Through the Looking Glass": By Lewis Carroll. July 16 to 18. Ages 5 and up.

Alice's other grand adventure puts her into Looking Glass Land where she undertakes a dangerous journey across the chessboard. Along the way, she encounters the monstrous Jubjub bird, the twins Tweedledum and Tweedledee, and Humpty Dumpty. Alice makes her way and defeats the Jabberwock to be crowned Queen.

"Sideways Stories From Wayside School": By John Olive. July 23 to 25. Ages 8 and up.

In this comic tale, students of the Wayside School are forced into a desperate struggle to restore some order to their wacky school.

"A Midsummer Night's Macbeth": By Don Fleming. July 23 to 25. Ages 8 and up.

The North High Crazy Dog Drama Club tries to mount a production of "A Midsummer Night's Dream," only to have the plot of "Macbeth" constantly intrude.

"Rent: School Edition": By Jonathon Larson. July 31 to Aug. 2. Ages 12 and up.

This musical follows a year in the lives of seven friends during the late 1980s. Under the shadow of the AIDS epidemic, the group manages to eke out a Bohemian lifestyle in New York's East Village.

"Once on this Island, Jr.": By Lynn Ahrens. Aug. 6 to 8. Ages 8 and up.

This tragic Caribbean tale tells the story of Ti Moune, an island peasant girl saved by the gods from a devastating storm.

"Romeo and Juliet": By Shakespeare. Aug. 6 to 8. Ages 8 and up.

Romeo and Juliet's families are locked in a deadly feud, yet the two youth find themselves deeply in love. Their burgeoning relationship sparks violent confrontations between the families, leading to a tragic conclusion.
