Sweet music in Edmonds

Yes. Those are the sounds of steel drums, Dobro, driving bass and drums coming from Edmonds City Park.

That can only mean it's time for the city's free Concert in the Park series, which kicks off July 12.

All concerts take place on Sundays in Edmonds City Park at Third and Pine streets in downtown Edmonds. So bring the family, lawn chairs and blankets and sit back for some music, dancing and other entertainment. When it rains, concerts are canceled at 2:30 p.m.

The Toucans: 3 p.m. July 12. This high-energy steel drum band based in Seattle has been playing around the Pacific Northwest for more than 13 years. They play a smorgasbord of Caribbean music, some home-cooked favorites, and classics from the prime of the steel band era.

"Taming of the Shrew": 3 p.m. July 19. This Seattle Shakespeare Company's Wooden O Productions show focuses on the headstrong Kate, who has a sharp tongue, volcanic temper and bows down to no man. But a suitor named Petruchio tries to reach her guarded heart, thus inspiring a comic courtship and no-holds-barred battle of the sexes.

Grupo Amoroso: 3 p.m. July 26. Bossa nova classics and Brazilian pop and jazz are performed by this rhythmic Seattle group.

Reilly & Maloney: 3 p.m. Aug. 2. Folk singers Ginny Reilly and David Maloney are playing together again after a 10-year hiatus. Though Maloney has increased his musical and storytelling repertoire for children and Reilly has broadened her interests into jazz, the two combine forces for this show.

Dented Trucks: 3 p.m. Aug. 9. This smokin' Texas and Chicago style blues band from Olympia promises some wicked guitar solos, a hard-driving bass and awesome drum grooves. More than half the music is original.

Portage Bay Big Band: 3 p.m. Aug. 16. This group plays big band swing -- old favorites and special requests.

Back Burner: 3 p.m. Aug. 23. This six-piece acoustic string band plays a mix of bluegrass, swing, jazz, country, and blues into a blend that's been dubbed "swing fusion."

Ballard Sedentary Sousa Band: 3 p.m. Aug. 30. The band takes listeners on a swirling carnival ride through the great hits of the golden age of band music. The performers wear mismatched high school and college band jackets and feature the world's only sedentary majorette, who performs baton-twirling while seated.
