MARYSVILLE — Petunia, the tiny dog that was spooked and ran away after a recent shooting in north Marysville, is again wagging her tail and back at home.
The 7-pound rat terrier was visiting a north Marysville home on July 8 when a man opened fire with a handgun in the living room.
Petunia ran away. The suspect’s ex-girlfriend was seriously injured. Police later arrested the alleged gunman.
John F. Weible, 70, remains behind bars on $200,000 bail.
The ex-girlfriend, 65, is recovering at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, her friend Pam Lambeth said.
“She sounded very tired, but she’s recovering very slowly,” Lambeth said.
The woman who was shot suffered damage to her lungs, diaphragm and liver.
Lambeth’s mother, Rosemary Nelson, 70, was visiting with her beloved dog, Petunia, when the shooting occurred.
Nelson witnessed the gunfire and was shaken by the violence and her dog’s disappearance.
In the wee hours of the morning following the shooting, Nelson fell and broke her hip, her daughter said.
She’s since had surgery and now is recovering at a nursing home.
Last week, Lambeth contacted The Herald and a photo of Petunia appeared in the paper along with a plea for help.
The next day, a man called Lambeth. Petunia was reunited with her family.
“Mom was able to relax and she’s on her way back to mending,” Lambeth said.
Until Nelson gets home, she and Petunia visit through a window.
As for Petunia, she seemed skittish, nervous and scared at first. The dog recognized Lambeth and clearly was pleased to be reunited.
“She was totally excited,” Lambeth said. “She actually peed on me.”
