Plant pick: Sedum pachyclados

WHAT: Sedum pachyclados is an excellent ground cover, particularly for hot, dry sites with poor soil.

WHY PLANT IT: This variety of sedum, also known as Afghani sedum or rhodiola pachyclados, forms a flat, dense mound of glossy blue-green leaves. Clusters of large white flowers appear in summer and then again in fall.

WHERE: It is best grown in well-drained moderately fertile to poor soil in full to part sun. It is very drought tolerant once established and can be propagated by division or cuttings.

HOW: It is well suited for the rock garden or edging for a dry border. It is also a good choice for containers and makes a good companion for Sapphire Blue sea holly or Storm Cloud agapanthus.

ACTUAL SIZE: This low-growing evergreen perennial grows to about 6 inches tall and spreads to about 12 inches wide.
