Boeing picks South Carolina for second production line

Posted at 2:11 pm by Jerry Cornfield

The Boeing Co. announced this afternoon it will build a second line of production for its much delayed Dreamliner 787 in South Carolina.

Gov. Chris Gregoire will hold a news conference at 2:45 pm to discuss the news.

Meanwhile, Snohomish County Executive Aaron Reardon said in a television interview, "We have to figure out what went wrong."

Here's more from his prepared statement:

“What's important moving forward is that we all understand why these two parties could not reach an agreement so that we may play a role in rebuilding this relationship. In addition, we must bring all the necessary parties together in Olympia to reach agreement on removing the barriers that prevent new investment and job creation."

And from Sen. Minority Leader Mike Hewitt, R-Walla Walla:

“Although today's announcement was the blow we hoped would not come, it is also a call to action. The next battle starts today, right now. We must do everything we can to retain the 737 line and keep all present and future aerospace jobs in Washington. Today we lost thousands of jobs. We cannot afford to lose thousands more."

boeing's southern accent...
Wow. Even I am impressed how boeing pulled this one off. After deciding to move to the south, they used a ploy of negotiating with the I.A.M. to extract even more money from South Carolina. Then they said the union didn't offer enough concessions to the company, attempting to turn a decision that would upset the union workers back against the union.... well it worked, now we'll hear from all the hand wringers that the union screwed us, didn't consult us, etc...Meanwhile the execs are whistling dixy and walking away from a proven profit maker. Once the union workers figure out all the problems and present a working system, it's on the move to a less expensive area for the workers. Do you think the execs will take a equal cut in pay ? nope, they've pocketed the bonus's for saving money even if the move does not work or make a profit ! Great dance McNerney !

Can you say Ostrich
1) I am not union however they got to choose my job stability, how messed up is that.
2) Did either union, and yes there are 2, if the employees would accept a 10 year no strike clause, or binding arbitration...I don't think they asked their members. If I was a union member I would be smokin mad at thier reckless disregard for my opinion.
3) Boeing has been telling this state and the people that they are out of touch. ie..moving to Chicago for education reasons, however it took 15 years for this state to even acknowledge this.
4) The moral question is should ANY union endorse a politcal person, Should your Gov. walk the picket line? She did...do you remember that? That is plain wrong.
5) There are a lot of people that want to speak ill of Boeing and point fingers. Have you thought of life without Boeing? Does California ring a bell. We are almost there.
6) I am not a union member and no one asked me about my job. I didn't go on strike, I didn't get a raise like both the bargining units got. So, remember not all WA Boeing employees are Union Members and some that are, are not happy with thier Union.
7) Boeing did what it had to do to stay in business. If you fault them for that, start looking at at your Government that has made doing business and living in this state toxic with high taxes on people and business. We have one of the highest gas taxes in the nation. There are plenty of places to point fingers. Instead of pointing fingers...dig in and figure a way to stop this exit for future projects. Quit complaining and start being part of a solution.

Where does it come from?
Where does the sense of entitlement come from? Boeing is doing business in a horrible economy and is doing what it needs to do to survive. Everything from layoffs to cutting education benefits has been seen as a some sort of personal attack.

I left Boeing Everett 3 months ago, on my own accord. My experience there was actually positive in my little smoke stack... I just got a better opportunity. But I can tell you that prior to my time Boeing, and after I left, I have never seen an environment where so many people are waiting for a reason to complain about the company they work for.

What statue is in front of the union building? Is it one of men and women working on an aircraft? No, it is of people on strike. What message is that sending? Give me what I want or I strike? How about cut your hair, put on a shirt with sleeves, and work an honest day for an honest wage.

You got outbid, the company is putting one line of one model in another state. Get over it. You were not producing anything more than excuses on the 787 anyway. I wonder why Renton produces so well what Everett struggles with? I mean it is the same company is it not?

Boeing, Boeing, Gone
Ah, the wonders of union representation. Well, after the workers at Boeing outsourced their salary negotiation to the IAM (I thought unions were against outsourcing?), they reaped the benefits of their agreement.

They have secure jobs through 2012, can expect a nasty strike in that contract year, then continued job security through the 2015 contract year at which time Boeing will likely be ready to move a significant part of manufacturing capability to SC.

I especially love how the IAM learned so much from the failed tactics of the UAW in Detroit. Instead of realizing that a saved job, even at a slightly lower rate or higher cost of benefits was worth more than no job at all, they bet the ranch on their 1950s strike strategy. They struck during the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression!

The union has truly failed us. I pray the workers in Everett will decertify their union ASAP as a last ditch effort to get additional production to the Puget Sound.

Good going
Good going Union. You struck yourselves right out of a job and screwed the rest of us right along with you. Round of applause.
