Meadowdale blasts Lynnwood 46-24

Meadowdale moved a step closer to winning a Western Conference 3A football title.

Senior running back Naji Moore-Taylor scored three touchdowns to help lead the Mavericks to a 46-24 victory over crosstown rival Lynnwood Oct. 23 at Edmonds Stadium.

Meadowdale (3-0 in the league, 8-0 overall) scored the first 32 points of the game.

“Overall, we got what we needed to get done,” said Meadowdale coach Mark Stewart. “It was really wet. That certainly does affect what we can get done. We’ve been efficient. … Defensively it was a decent night.”

Meadowdale takes on Everett at 7 p.m, Thursday, Oct. 29 at Everett Memorial Stadium. A victory over the Seagulls would give the Mavericks the league’s No. 1 seed to the quad-district playoffs.

“(The Seagulls) do a pretty good job with the Wing-T,” Stewart said. “They’ve been playing really well lately. … We’re going to have our hands full.”

Moore-Taylor, who rushed for 171 yards on 22 carries scored on touchdown runs of 4, 5 and 8 yards in the first quarter. The Meadowdale defense also produced some points when Kyler Larson retuned a fumble 65 yards for a touchdown.

Quarterback Danny McDonald found tight end Casey Hamlett on a 10-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter. McDonald completed 8 of 16 passes for 148 yards.

“We’re trying to build so we can get into the playoffs,” Stewart said. “We’re always trying to make sure we stay sharp and improve each week. Some of the execution of our run plays was big for us.”

Lynnwood (0-4, 0-8) struggled again early in the game but managed to score four touchdowns, which pleased coach Dorian Manza.

“I felt we played Meadowdale pretty well,” he said. “We had over 100 yards rushing, over 200 years passing.”

Senior running back Typhis Cochran ran for 148 yards on 11 carries and scored two touchdowns. Quarterback Michael Stanley completed 9 of 14 passes for 196 yards and a touchdown. Wide receiver Josh Latimer caught three passes for 131 yards.

“I was really pleased we were able to execute,” Manza said. “We were able to throw well.”

Despite falling behind, the Royals kept plugging away throughout the game.

“I’m proud of our players,” Manza said. “Our guys kept their heads up. The effort was outstanding.”

Lynnwood hosts Sedro-Woolley at 7 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 29.

“I think we have a legitimate shot at winning the game,” Manza said. “We’re hoping to win our last two games.”

Manza is hoping to build upon the success in the second half against Meadowdale. The Royals scored 18 points in the third and fourth quarters.

“Stanley is throwing the ball and executing well,” Manza said. “With each game he’s gaining confidence. … It was a step in the right direction as far as confidence is concerned for us.”
