Expand your rhody collection at Whidbey sale

Rhody love: Meerkerk Gardens, a woodland and rhododendron display garden on Whidbey Island, will host its annual autumn rhody sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Rhody fans will find mature and starter sizes of species rhododendrons, fragrant varieties and hybrids.

Checks, cash and credit cards accepted. Proceeds support the care of the not-for-profit gardens.

Prizes will be awarded for the best costume of a flower, plant, insect or fairy in both children and adult categories. A baked-goods sale supports Meerkerk’s butterfly garden.

Find the gardens at 3531 Meerkerk Lane, Greenbank. Go to www.meerkerkgardens.org for more information.

Online chatting: Steve Smith, the Whistling Gardener and owner of Sunnyside Nursery of Marysville, has started a new blog, just in time for fall.

See thewhistlinggardener. blogspot.com. You can also find the blog by going to The Herald’s list of gardening blogs at www.heraldnet.com/mudraker.

Save the dates: The Northwest Flower & Garden Show will be Feb. 3 to 7 at the Washington State Convention & Trade Center in Seattle.

“Beauty and Functionality” will be the theme at the show, featuring 25 display gardens, speakers, seminars and exhibitors.

Portland-based O’Loughlin Trade Shows purchased the show from show founder Duane Kelly in June and is calling this year’s show “a new beginning for a Northwest tradition.”

Admission will be $20 at the door for adults, $5 for ages 13 to 17, and free for ages 12 and younger.

Tickets will go on sale in early December at $16, or $15 for groups of 20 or more.

Go to www.gardenshow.com or call 253-756-2121 for more information.
