However, only Rosselli’s name appears on the ballot. Rosselli decided to file for the seat because McCaulley had run unopposed twice before, he said. “We need to bring in new business and tourists,” Rosselli said. “I will work with our neighbors, the school district and the Forest Service to help create jobs.” Rosselli previously ran an unsuccessful campaign against Mayor Joyce Jones. Earlier he was elected to serve on the council, but an accident forced Rosselli to resign after just one year on the council. Injuries from the accident caused memory problems, he said. “We need to beautify the town, improve the infrastructure and get activities for kids,” Rosselli said. “I love Darrington and the changes I wanted five years ago never happened.” During candidate filing week in June, McCaulley sent by fax a notarized copy of her re-election candidacy form to the Snohomish County Auditor’s Office. As the pastor of Darrington United Methodist Church, she also performed three funerals that week. She hosted 40 people for dinner on that Friday. Then she left on a family vacation to Alaska to celebrate her granddaughter’s high school graduation. The notarized copy was OK during filing week, county elections manager Garth Fell said. However, when the elections staff tried to call the two-term councilwoman the following week to get the original copy of the signed form, McCaulley couldn’t be reached. “We tried to contact her and even got town hall involved,” Fell said. “It’s a requirement that we have the signed copy.” When she got home, McCaulley, who thought the notarized copy was good enough, found out her name wasn’t on the election ballot. “It was just a matter of miscommunication,” McCaulley said. “So after getting some pressure from many individuals and groups around town, I decided to register as a write-in candidate.” Because she is a declared write-in candidate, McCaulley’s name won’t have to be spelled letter-perfect by voters who choose to write her name on their ballots, Fell said. She will collect any votes that look like her name, he said. She is running for a third term in order to complete some of the work she had started, McCaulley said. “We’re applying for grants for continuing work on our water system and I would like to see the proposed skate park through to completion,” McCaulley said. “I also serve as a sort of legal eagle on the council, keeping the group on task and in compliance with the state’s Open Public Meetings Act.
