PREP SOCCER ROUNDUP: Kamiak stays alive with shootout win

MUKILTEO — After falling behind 1-0 and losing its starting goalkeeper, the Kamiak girls soccer team didn’t hit the panic button.

Instead, freshman Emma Makela stepped in as goalie for Kamiak and shut out Stanwood the remainder of regulation. Makela also made one of the five shootout goals in Kamiak’s 2-1 victory in a loser-out 4A District 1 playoff game at Kamiak High School Wednesday night.

“Its a big game for a freshman,” said Kamiak head coach Beth Stewart, whose team will play in a winner-to-state game Friday. “She just did an outstanding job tonight.”

Stanwood got on the board first with a penalty kick goal by Keanae Loera in the 55th minute. Kamiak responded with a score in the 60th minute. Cassidy Seckman took in a slot pass up the right side from Lauren Luke and found the net to tie the score.

Kamiak then scored all five of its shootout attempts to hold off Stanwood.

Edmonds Woodway 1, Lake Stevens 0 (shootout): At Lake Stevens, Edmonds-Woodway plays Kamiak in a winner-to-state, loser-out game at 5:30 p.m., Friday at Shoreline Stadium.

King’s 3, Seattle Academy 2: At Tukwila, King’s Hillary Zevenbergen recorded a hat trick, with two assists from Taylor Hauck and another from Mackenzie Graham, to lead King’s to the 1A Tri-district championship game. Carolin Dapper and Maddy McDevitt split time in goal for King’s. King’s will host the championship game at 3 p.m. Saturday.
