The report from the Columbus Chamber offers a variety of options for strengthening the hockey team’s financial position, such as new taxes or fees to support it. Other suggestions include allowing the team to renegotiate its lease for Nationwide Arena or trying to attract a second major tenant, such as a basketball team. “It is important that our community retain this team,” said Dave Blom, chairman of the Columbus Chamber board. “The Columbus Blue Jackets impact our regional economy, support thousands of jobs and bring millions of dollars in tax revenue that contribute to our quality of life.” Bruins sign Rask to extension BOSTON — The Boston Bruins have signed backup goalie Tuukka Rask to a two-year contract extension that will keep him with the team through the 2011-12 season. The 22-year-old Finn has appeared in nine NHL games with a 5-2-2 record and 2.43 goals-against average as Tim Thomas’ backup. Rask shut out the Edmonton Oilers 2-0 in his last start on Oct. 31. NHL suspends O’Brien TORONTO — The NHL has suspended Vancouver Canucks defenseman Shane O’Brien for one game. His stick made contact with the New York Rangers’ Sean Avery while both players were on their respective benches in a game on Tuesday. Hurricanes recall Boychuk RALEIGH, N.C. — The reeling Carolina Hurricanes are hoping last year’s first-round draft pick, Zach Boychuk, can help them snap their long losing streak. The Hurricanes said they are recalling the center from their AHL Albany affiliate and said he will be available to play tonight against Toronto. The 20-year-old Boychuk has four goals and five assists in his first full professional season with Albany. He was taken with the 14th pick in the 2008 draft and he played in two games with the Hurricanes last October before he was returned to his junior team. Associated Press
