Boy, 16, admits role in Sultan slaying of teen
The boy was among a group suspected of beating a teenager to death on a Sultan street.
By Diana Hefley Herald Writer
EVERETT — A 16-year-old gang member admitted to taking part in the vicious beating and stabbing death of another teenager in downtown Sultan.
Jaime Santana, shackled and barely old enough to drive, pleaded guilty Tuesday to second-degree murder.
Santana admitted that he was part of a group of five Sultan friends accused of attacking Antonio Marks, of Marysville, in June.
Santana likely will spend the rest of his teenage years and most of his 20s locked behind prison bars.
Marks, 17, was found lying in a pool of blood June 17 a few feet from Sultan’s City Hall.
A video surveillance camera caught the slaying on tape. The tape shows Marks being kicked repeatedly in the head and then stabbed several times in the chest.
Marks was kicked so hard investigators found several different shoe tread patterns on his head.
Marks died of a head injury and stab wounds.
The other suspects charged with second-degree murder are: Marco Castillo, 20; his brother, Adolfo Castillo, 17; Ana Cary Ayala Bustos, 16; and Ivette Rico, 18, all of Sultan.
All were teens at the time of the attack and were charged as adults.
Investigators believe all of the defendants are members of a Sultan-based gang called Brown Pride Soldiers, or BPS, court papers said. Marks also was believed to be a member of a rival gang and dating the sister of the Castillo brothers.
A hearing is scheduled next week to decide whether prosecutors will be able to use evidence gathered against the Castillo brothers. Marco Castillo is accused of throwing the first punch and repeatedly stabbing Marks.
Investigators say the attack came hours after Marks came to the Castillos’ house on Cedar Street in Sultan and got into some sort of dispute with Marco Castillo. Marks left, but the teens later ran into each other on the street.
Marco Castillo knocked Marks to the ground, prosecutors say.
The video shows an older teen standing over Marks and punching him several times.
Marks didn’t fight back, falling flat on his back after the first blow.
The attacker then backs away and the other four teenagers are seen kicking Marks in the head, prosecutors allege.
The video then shows the first teen stab Marks several times in the chest while the other teens continued to kick the motionless Marks in the head, court papers said.
The attack lasted 43 seconds.
Marco Castillo allegedly told investigators he didn’t intend to kill Marks but wanted to hurt him enough so that he couldn’t retaliate.
Santana was the last person seen with Marks. He grabbed Marks’ cell phone and then kicked him in the head, prosecutors said.
“We feel it’s in his best interest to accept this offer,” Everett defense attorney Thomas Cox said Tuesday during the plea hearing.
Santana faces up to 18 years in prison. Prosecutors will recommend a 10-year sentence. Santana agreed to testify as a prosecution witness.
He is scheduled to be sentenced in January. He likely will be imprisoned at a juvenile detention facility until he is 18 and then he’ll be transferred to an adult prison.

I've reread my post, no where does the term "ignorant" appear. But I congratulate you; you have drawn an accurate conclusion. Perhaps a first?
As to "liberal" opinions; I am no liberal. My opinions are based upon fundamental research... go check the professional literature... see for yourself.
A specific resource is John Howard University in Canada. Virtually all of the professional research and resulting literature comes from Canada. They have an easily located web site.
I have to wonder at the motivation for your vehement attack on the relative of the victim in the original story. Perhaps.... uh....?

Calling me ignorant because I have no pity for a convicted child molester just shows how ignorant you are. Yes it's true that often sex offenders were involved with terrible things as they were growing up but that, in my opinion, in no way excuses their actions as adults. People should be held accountable for their actions and for idiots like you to defend their terrible actions just shows how messed up this society has become. Any and all child molesters, sex offenders, rapists, etc are POS's and I'll stand by that till the day I die.
Oh and for the record, I created this account today, just so I could express my opinion ater reading that women's post defending her molester son. People like you and her should hang out. Seeing as how you both obviously support child molestation, or at very least feel that people who do such terrible things should be treated more fairly....
Do me a favor. Get off your high horse, take a step back and realize that you, posting your ridiculous liberal opinions are no different than me (to a point). You're on your computer, showing your ignorance to the world in making excuses for people who don't deserve it... and in the process taking shots at me because I posted my opinions.

Rosa,
I apologize for the comments of the poster named Jared. You shouldn't have to be exposed to such abuse. I'm sorry for your family's loss.

...think. I know it's asking a lot, and it'll probably hurt, but try.
"Sex offenders", society's currently identified "monsters" come from somewhere. Have you ever considered HOW they come to behave as they do?
I'm going to give you a simple, real life example, Jared. Try to follow along.
Some children are sexually assaulted from an early age, and the assault goes on for years. Now, Jared, let's assume you had children. You might send them to school. You might even expect that after several years exposure to readin' writin' and 'rithmtic, they'd come home and repeat what they've learned. That, Jared, is what is called a reasonable expectation.
Children who are sexually abused frequently tell no one. Children who are sexually abused over an extended period of time, often repeat the behavior THAT THEY WERE TAUGHT. Just like readin', writin' and 'rithmatic, Jared.
Sex is far more intense and has a greater impact on a child who knows NOTHING about it. Society, for all the research that has gone into sexual offending and abuse, knows remarkably little about the effects of such abuse on children over time.
Now, Jared, you call the other writer's relative a POS. Let me tell you Jared, I'd much rather that POS live next door to me, than someone who hides behind his computer screen while he demonstrates his ignorance for the entire world to see.

First of all what happened to Antonio Marks is terrible and the people who killed him should be put away for life.
As for your piece of sh*t son who is in prison for molesting a child.... he should be put away for life also.... if not put to death. Are you kidding me?! How can you sit there and say you're worthless coward son didn't ruin the lives of that child and his/her family. He RAPED a child!!! How dare you make it out to sound like the punishment he got was to severe. I hope he's being raped in prison because HE RAPED A CHILD. He's as worthless as the kids who killed Antonio Marks.

The "Brown Pride Soldiers". Doesn't sound like an adaptive, socially integrated organization to me.
Children viciously beating and stabbing one of their peers nearly to death... and then scurrying away into the dark like cockroaches, leaving their victim to die alone.
Jaime Santana. Antonio Marks. Marco Castillo.
Adolfo Castillo. Ana Cary Ayala Bustos. Ivette Rico.
Let's ask the forbidden question: What is the immigration status of these... people...? What is/was the immigration status of their parents?
What's up with the parents, by the way? Parents who raise their... children... to be vicious street killers? Parent who raise their children to be members of a make believe street gang, and not members of American Society.
Hey, City of Sultan!! Hey Snohomish County!! Hey Washington State!! Hey America!! Hey reader!! How's the "multiculturalism" and "diversity" working out for you? Are your doors & windows locked, by the way? It'll be dark in a few hours.

It's amazing that you can take someone's life away, viciously at that, and spend a decade or less in jail. Life is supposed to be precious. I do not care about how this "kid" will spend the rest of his teen years and some of his twenties behind bars. At least he still has his life. They deserve a harsher punishment for what they did.
