Holiday suggestions for the NFL

While much of America will be out early today to kick off the holiday shopping season, NFL teams will be conducting business as usual as they prepare for this weekend’s games.

So since NFL players, coaches and executives won’t have time to enjoy the sales, feel free to pick up a gift or two if you see anything appropriate while you’re out today.

You think you’re in rough shape after eating too much turducken? That’s how fans of the Browns, Buccaneers, Rams and Lions have felt since September.

And since when it comes to holidays, tradition rules, a beat switch at our paper is not enough to kill the NFL gift list. So taking the baton from Scott Johnson, I present the Herald’s ninth annual NFL gift guide.

For Seahawks coach Jim Mora: Consistently accountable competitors. Or is it accountably consistent competitors? Or maybe it’s consistently competitive accountants? I’m confused.

For Vikings quarterback Brett Favre: The ability to make up his mind, on the first try, this offseason.

For the Denver Broncos: A calendar on which every month is September or October.

For the Tennessee Titans: A calendar that skips September and October.

For the Buffalo Bills: A big-name coach who will flirt back with them.

For the Chicago Bears: A franchise quarterback. This is Chicago’s version of a little girl asking for a pony. They keep asking, but keep ending up disappointed when they look under the tree and see a new dress. Or Jay Cutler.

For Rams running back Steven Jackson: A descent team. He could end up with 1,600 rushing yards and one victory this season.

For Seahawks receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh: Matt Hasselbeck in a Santa suit, flinging footballs his way as often as T.J. believes it is appropriate.

For Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams: An owners box with tinted windows. Or if you’re on a budget, mittens.

For the Arizona Cardinals: Lots of road playoff games.

For teams looking for a new coach: The approval of Kathy Holmgren.

For Patriots coach Bill Belichick: Two yards. And if he can have this gift early (like, say, two weeks ago in Indy), that would be appreciated.

For receiver/convict Plaxico Burress: A holster. What? Too soon?

For neutral football fans: A Super Bowl between the undefeated Colts and undefeated Saints. Who wouldn’t want to see that? Well, aside from the 1972 Dolphins.

For the Washington Redskins: Wait. . . What’s that, we don’t have room to list all of their needs? Sorry. Moving on.

For the Seattle Seahawks: Quarterback pressure and a consistent run game.

For Seahawks fans: A better season next year (wait, didn’t they ask for this last year too?)
