Merchants split doubleheader with Coquitlam

COQUITLAM, B.C. — Wasted opportunities kept the Everett Merchants from sweeping a doubleheader Sunday against the Coquitlam Angels in Pacific International League play.

Brooks Roy tossed a complete game and Andy Lyon added a solo home run as the Merchants (8-1 overall, 7-1 PIL) earned a 13-3 win in the first contest. Jace Sloan had a two-run single and Dan Schmidt had a run-scoring single in an eight-run fourth inning for Everett.

The same run-scoring power didn’t come in the second game as the Merchants stranded a handful of runners on base in several innings in a 2-1 loss. Lyon had an RBI triple for Everett and Coquitlam (5-9-1) scored the go-ahead run on a throwing error from center field in the second inning.
