Bedard’s first outing: one run, 52 pitches in 2 2/3 innings for Peoria

All we have so far are the raw numbers from Erik Bedard’s first rehab start tonight with the rookie-level Peoria Mariners against the Surprise Rangers in Surprise, Ariz.

Bedard worked 2 2/3 innings, allowing four hits and a run, striking out three, walking none and throwing one wild pitch. He faced 12 batters and threw 52 pitches.

Fifty-two pitches in 2 2/3 innings. Midseason form, you might say?

Let’s give the guy a break right now. I can only imagine the young hitters were doing what young hitters do, swinging early and often. We’ve seen big-league pitchers at spring training go down to get their work in minor league exhibitions, and the numbers often are worrisome if you don’t realize how undisciplined young hitters can be.

The most important part of tonight’s outing won’t be known until tomorrow. That’s when the Mariners will learn how Bedard feels after his first real game since shoulder surgery last August. If he’s OK, he’ll start again Saturday for Peoria.

Thanks to MILB.com, here’s the play-by-play during the time Bedard was in the game:
