DARRINGTON — Some of the world’s best archers are competing here this week at the National Field Archery Association’s Outdoor National Field Championships.
The tournament, which has attracted about 300 archers from as far away as Australia, Hawaii and New York, starts today and continues through Sunday in Darrington.
The public is welcome to attend the Pro-Am competition on Friday evening. Ceremonial exercises are set to begin at 5:30 p.m., and the professionals plan take to the field at 6 p.m. The event is free.
The Darrington archery range is located at 312 Sauk Ave. Turn south from Highway 530 at the fire station and keep going.
Dennis and Candy Vincent, their family and the rest of the Darrington archery club have been working for months to prepare for the championships. It is the second time the club and the town have hosted the national field archery championships.
The Vincents have six archers staying in their house this week while they live in their camping trailer down at the archery grounds.
“We are very excited to see the tournament get started. It’s really come together,” Candy Vincent said. “We appreciate all the volunteers.”
Darrington Mayor Joyce Jones is hosting one of the top archers, a woman from Ohio.
“The people here for the championships are outstanding,” Jones said. “It’s a great week for our town.”
Bows and arrows have been around since man started hunting, and field archery seeks to replicate hunting in a competitive, outdoor setting.
Darrington is a perfect location for field archery, Candy Vincent said.
“We hope to see a lot of people come out to see what it’s all about.”
