Village Theatre's KIDSTAGE SummerStock brings the Broadway hit "High School Musical" to the stage and delivers the show's two key elements for teen and 'tween theatergoers: thumping tunes and a message.

The story is based on cliques colliding and students taking a stab at the status quo, which, in the end, means that breaking stereotypes is not only a good thing, but a goal.

The story focuses on the basketball team captain and a new female student who both decide to audition for the school musical but find themselves competing against the school's star performers, according to press material.

Their struggle plays out against a backdrop of pop rock tunes such as "We're All in This Together," "Get'cha Head in the Game" and "Breaking Free."

This SummerStock cast also has a little something extra: more dancers.

The 49-member cast is quite a bit bigger than the average production and those numbers just compliment the show's choreography, director Jessica Low said.

"So there are many instances where we have added several people into songs that normally call for smaller groups," Low said in a statement. "I believe that this not only adds to our story but gives every student as much stage time as possible."

The show features young actors from Arlington, Bothell, Edmonds, Everett, Granite Falls, Lake Stevens, Lynnwood, Marysville, Mill Creek, Mukilteo, Shoreline, Snohomish and Stanwood.

"High School Musical" opens at 7:30 tonight at the Everett Performing Arts Center, 2710 Wetmore Ave., Everett. Shows are at 7:30 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays through Aug. 22.

Tickets are $13 and $12. Call 425-257-8600 or go to www.villagetheatre.org.
